One two, JEH is coming for you. Well, you have all had a reasonable amount of time to either see the new Nightmare flick or decide you don't care enough about it to sit through an extended spoiler filled discussion about it. After emerging from the first screening in town, your hosts sat down to record their initial reactions and a segment only meant to last a few minutes stretched to nearly an hour. So we have another in a line of Platinum Dunes remakes that is receiving the critical drubbing we all knew it would but the question lingers - did they really go so wrong as to deserve the Freddy style skewering it's gotten? Time for a fair (emphasis on fair, as in keep the nitpicking in the basement), analysis of Nightmare 2010. Despite disparate locations of your hosts this week, we still managed to get in a schlock corner and it's a winner. Orson Welles Drunk Outtakes while attempting to shoot a wine commercial. You may have heard about it before but its a must see. The Italian Horror film selection of 1981's The Beyond earned a share of the episode title as it was truly an....experience. In the process of breaking down the general outline of the "story", numerous elements are discussed openly (don't worry, not the crazy ending). The reason for loose control on spoilers is really due to the near impossibility of ruining The Beyond through mere description. This is a film that must be seen to be appreciated. A discourse is held on the 'Absolute Film' theory and how it appears to apply to specific Italian filmmakers. Stay tuned, the Italian Horror film festival is getting interesting. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed The Beyond, and I think your observations were spot on, and mirror my own thoughts about it exactly.
Seeing the ending for the first time for me is something I'll always remember. Yes it makes no sense (at least by conventional movie standards), but my jaw just dropped at the scene that was in front of me.
The sad thing is I think you've peaked with Fulci now; I personally don't think it gets better than The Beyond. I've grown to love City of the Living Dead, but it's almost like Fulci was feeling his way with the kind of film making he was experimenting with, and then mastered it with The Beyond, only to lose it with House by the Cemetery. There's some great stuff in there, and I do actually like it, but it suffers with the pacing at times. Nowhere near as much as with House by the Cemetery though.

Just a comment about Freddy Kruger as a pedophile. I actually read in a few places that the Original Wes Craven script had him as a pedophile but then changed it to child Killer I believe due to studio pressures. Rue Morgue has mentioned this a few time in there magazine. It is also mentioned on wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddy_Krueger |

Technically I think thats what he is. Generally serial killing is a sexually motivated crime whether or not any sexual acts are commited or not. For most of them the killing itself is sexual to them, thats why they do it, that's were the pleasure lies for them and its why their victims fit their own sexual tastes, why homosexual serial killers kill gay men, hetrosexual serial killers kill women - a serial killer of children is therefore most likely sexually attracted to children. It's strange but I'd just always taken it as read that Freddy in life was, by nature, a paedophile. I was genuinely surprised to find it up for debate. I think I must simply have taken far too much interest in true crime books back in my dark teenage years or something. |

That's a great point and it makes sense. When children are murder by a non parent it's usually in order to cover up a sexual crime. There would be little motive other wise unless it was for ransom or possibly they were mentally ill. Neither being the case here. |

I liked the the new NOES. Not great cinema by any means, but lets remember, none of the follow ups to the original have been, and this is just another followup, even if it is a remake. It's still loads better than 2, 6 and possibly even 5 or 7.
Where it fails is when it tries to recreate a scene from the original. The bathtub scene is a perfect example, and Tony and Ted nailed it as one of the problems. The original is full of tension and suspense, the remake seems like it was just tacked on. The scene where Freddy comes through the wal is another example. It's like some one said "Hey, that scene will be a lot easier to do this time around since we can use CGI. It'll look a lot better too!" Well it didn't. The original was etherial and unexpected. This one was just....goofy. It was like a disney character gone wrong.
Where the film succeeds is when it attempts to homage. Instead of bisquick on the stairs and blood pouring out of the bed, we get a viscous hallway and blood pouring down from the celing. Just enough to remind you of the old film, but with still definitively the new movie. The same with the mother getting it at the end. You remember Freddy got her in the original, but the actual scene is unique enough to be all about the new film.
Mabey we were spoiled by Freddy vs. Jason, but really, was anyone expecting this movie to be a masterpiece? I really don't think it deserves the venom it gets in every review I see. It's not going to be hall of fame material, but really, how many Nightmare films are?
I'm a long time fan by the way, VERY invested in the character. I can do the makeup perfectly. I drove five and a half hours each way (all in one day) last year to meet Robert Englund at Flashback weekend in Chicago, and my four year old can sing the entire "1, 2 freddys coming for you" song.

Ted - That's great that you enjoyed The Beyond for all it's surreal and nightmarish qualities. As you mentioned and I was thinking the same thing while I was listening. You actually might be ready to revisit Argento. |

I did not mind the spoilers at all i knew after the let down of the Friday what ever it was i have no use to hear the voice that JEH used in watchmen the use of CG when they Screwed with one of the classic Scene OF Freddy popping out of the Wall
I was not impressed with the Film at all 0-out of 10
and i though that they wanted to show Freddy as a Character u had to feel bad for because you never know if he was or was not a child molester or not

It seems Doug also used it last episode to justify Diary of the Dead. Just because something is better than the worst thing ever does not mean it's worthwhile. Getting my finger chopped off is definitely preferable to being decapitated but that still doesn't make it a good experience. I'm not saying people shouldn't enjoy as much turn-off-your-brain entertainment as they want, but it puzzles me that saying something is just a notch above total shit is often treated as a compliment to the film. I'm really enjoying this excursion into Italian horror. I haven't seen The Beyond (yet) but Ted's comments on it, and the way he's gradually realigning his expectations to gain the perspective of the fans of this particular sub genre, feel very similar to my own mental trajectory with regards to Suspiria. Maybe the next time the topic of Argento is revisited the thrashing won't be quite so unanimous...  |

Looking forward to more Fulci talk, I agree that the Beyond is the summit of the mountain. Anybody see the new Microsoft commercials with the shark vs Zombie scene from Zombi in it? I nearly fell out of my chair.

I had the question about Freddy being a pedophile after Jason Vs Freddy. During this weeks podcast i believe Tony or Ted said it has never been anywhere in the movie, but at the begining of Freddy Vs Jason Freddy, (pre-dead) is seductively liking the pictures of the kids, I remember thinking they were implying pedophilia. I could be wrong, but that is the impression I got.
