We have travelled the globe in the course of the podcast to discuss the horror genre output from specific countries or locales and have met with a lot of success. This week we travel to far north to take a look at what a geographical group of nations are up to - Nordic Horror. Expanding beyond the subset of countries known as Scandinavia we are discussing films from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and even Iceland this week, once again finding ourselves surprised at what we found. Featuring some visually stunning locations, the unique wintery setting of frigid terror, and a particular brand of dark humour, there are titles here for all fans of horror. Some of the movies covered include revisits with Let the Right One In, Troll Hunter, Dead Snow, Rare Exports and others but there is also Frostbiten, Harpoon aka Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre, Blood Runs Cold, Drowning Ghost and all three instalments of the Cold Prey franchise. With plenty more titles to go there is sure to be another chapter to our exploration of Nordic Horror coming soon. Following a chilling discussion of frozen horror, we chat about some recent watches including Chronicle, Ghost Rider 2(!), The Walking Dead. We announce a brand new giveaway courtesy of our friends at Solaris / Rebellion Press offering up prize packages of 4 sets of 4 graphic novels! Spin us a yarn to enter. Finally, a word of warning... Ted is in a rare mood thanks to a very trying week. Tune in for the details. As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324

Another great show guys.
Glad to hear you might be doing some Bergman films in the future. Seventh Seal is really accesible, but I think Winter Light is the best; really short film about a Priest who loses his faith, but decides that he can't just drop out and keeps on anyway.
A tip for Bergman would be to read some analysis of his films before seeing some of them because I watched some of them (The Silence, for one) and thought they were okay, but didn't pick up on alot of the imagery because some of it is from Swedish mythology and some biblical, which I had little knowledge of, and when re-watching the same films with a knowledge of some of the imagery it did make the experience much more fulfilling.

Thanks for the Bergman tips. The challenge was solidified after recording and the agreement was as follows:
Tony - Seventh Seal Ted - Hour of the Wolf Doug - Virgin Spring
...should be interesting.
btw - this would make for a great opportunity to give us a call with thoughts on Bergman films (or Nordic output in general)

Great episode as ever, guys!!
Nice to have Doug back on the show and can't wait to hear his thoughts on THE VIRGIN SPRING, which Wes Craven used as a loose basis for his seminal LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT.
Also Ted, please stick at it with LOCKE & KEY!! You hit the nail on the head with regards to WELCOME TO LOVECRAFT being very much a stage-setting beginning, but believe me, it gets MUCH better later on...

I really hope you guys do the Bergman show. I own all 25 of his films available in the US, two documentaries about him, and I have read one of his novels. So, I'm a fan for sure!
And yes, sidach, Winter Light is the best!

Good episode. I think Tony’s got the right idea with cinemas; pick a time when the dickheads won’t be there. Personally, I prefer to watch movies in the comfort of my own home.
Frostbiten gets a high recommend from me too. Refreshingly different take on the genre. I was similarly impressed with Let The Right One In, Dead Snow and Cold Prey (note to self: must get the third instalment of that).
As for Walking Dead, it had been getting a bit “zombie of the week”. The incident in town was a much-needed shot in the arm.

Congrates to Tony for landing the role in the play.
Thoughtless, self-centered douche-bags are the prime reason I avoid the theater. The secondary reason is my ever decreasing ability to put up with the antics of thoughtless, self-centered douche-bags. The cost of the ticket doesn't help much, either.
Looking forward to more Nordic discussion. I've added a few of these titles to my Netflix queue and Amazon wishlist.

My laptop caught a fatal case of Windows Update Fever about a year and a half ago--it just crashed in the middle of the installation and wouldn't boot up again until I completely replaced the hard drive. The punks out there writing up viruses and stealing identities shake my faith in humanity, but it's when the companies that control everything set out to get us that I'm really afraid. I enjoyed the look at Nordic horror. A relevant piece worth checking out is The White Reindeer from 1952, a Finnish TV movie about a woman who occasionally turns into a vampire reindeer after the local witch doctor's love potion goes sour. Sounds ridiculous, but it's well done and subtly atmospheric in the vein of The Cat People or a lesser-known Universal classic. There are clips on YouTube to whet the appetite, and if anyone's interested in more I might be able to help. Also, the contest sounds right up my alley. I'm uncomfortable with my voice but I might have to enter just for the fun of it. Was a deadline mentioned?

Not sure why you agreed to see "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," Tony, but a quick note about it: it's actually more of a soft-ish reboot than a direct sequel to the first. .... Anyway, carry on!

Well done Tony! Congratulations! have someone film your performance and post it! Ted, dude, sorry about your laptop. Perfect time to get a mac What's up Doug! Good to hear you back on the show. Really enjoyed the Nordic talk. Sounds like some great films to look forward to that I wouldnt have known about otherwise. I was really impressed by Let The Right One In so I'm very psyched to watch some more of the output from that part of the world. Definately wanna catch that slasher trilogy Cold Prey. So you want a campfire story? Coming right up!

Just watched Cold prey and have 2+3 ready to go but will save them as im far too tired. Anyway quick thoughts on the first.. Average. Not that I mean that in a bad way, its a decent slasher, seen it all before though. Guess my hopes were a little high after some really strong reviews.. Im still hopeful for the next 2 and would totally recommend to fans.
