This has the potential to become one of my favorite TV series...
Tomorrow on Discovery Channel, there is a new show starting called Dual Survival. The premise is that it has two men put into a remote location trying to survive. The kicker is that one survives using all natural resources while the other uses modern equipment. The commercial sort of gives the feel of Survivorman vs a well equipped weekend warrior. Hopefully it will be as good as and along the lines of Les Stroud's productions.

Two others that I forgot:
Survivorman
Penn & Teller's Bullshit (which by the way has started its new season on Showtime)

Glad to see Survivorman get a mention, loved that show. Lots of great moments in the series but his last episode in New Guinea was one of the best (complete with getting stoned off some jungle nut). I really liked that Les Stroud was never a superhero and wasn't always successful at what he was trying (harpoon fishing in the arctic, trying to find water in the utah canyonlands), which made it realistic. Bear Grylls is a buffoon.

I agree with Doug.
For 5.98 seasons it would have been 'Lost'. But that last .02 of a season just blew it off the top ten list never mind the top spot.

I only wish they'd clean it up a bit because I'd love to show a few of their eps to my students (notable the bottled water episode).

I would say The Sopranos as my overall favorite series to date, but season 6 and the finale was just so disappointing, it almost spoils the entire series for me. Dexter is by far the best show that's still running, in my opinion. Not a bad episode yet. So I guess Dexter is my favorite...
Honorable mentions: Freaks and Geeks Monty Python's Flying Circus Absolutely Fabulous The IT Crowd Are Your Afraid of the Dark? Salute Your Shorts Six Feet Under (If you're into Dexter, go back and check this series out. It's even more Michael C. Hall goodness. Seasons 3 and 4 are a bit rough, but overall a great series.)

What you'll get with Jericho is a damn good idea that was unfortunately diluted with too many piss-poor fillers to stretch the series longer than it ever had any business to be aired. There is a series finale, but it was rushed to the point of near confusion. And, in all honesty, I was so fed up with the series at that point that I cannot recall how open the finale was. I think they left a small opening, but I'm not sure. My advise would be to give it a try and watch the first season. The second season grows stale rather quickly and is only watchable for the occasional revelations of the characters. So after the first season, I'd go onto the internet and read about the second season. You will get all the character revelations that way without the waste of your time. Thanks. Sounds like the Chris Carter "Millennium". Great first season and then a spiral out of control. I think I will give it a shot. My other option was Supernatural and if it wasn't on the WB I would have already made the leap but I cant get excited about that channels programs. The WB doesn't exist anymore; it is now The CW and has been for a while now, obviously. Bear Grylls is a buffoon. ... What don't you like about Bear? I don't know about you but I certainly would want someone like him around if I was lost or stranded out in the middle of nowhere.

... What don't you like about Bear? I don't know about you but I certainly would want someone like him around if I was lost or stranded out in the middle of nowhere. The big problem I find with Bear is that he takes unnecessary risks. The fact that a good portion of his show is staged isn't that big a deal to me, except when they tried to portray it as otherwise.

I don't watch much TV nowadays on account of it's mostly crap. Was into Red Dwarf when it came out but having seen some of the re-runs I don’t think it’s stood the test of time. Ditto Young Ones. Comedy-wise for me it has to be Fawlty Towers, Ripping Yarns, Blackadder and League of Gentlemen. Honourable mentions for Porridge and Rising Damp, but only because of Ronnie Barker and Leonard Rossiter. Best comedy on TV right now in my opinion is the IT Crowd but that can be a bit hit and miss. New series/season starts tomorrow.
As for genre stuff, there is precious little to choose from. Really didn’t like Buffy. Way too glossy and teenage. Never got into X-Files either. Lost lost me after a few episodes; they seemed to be making it up as they went along.
I enjoyed Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and Tales From the Crypt. I don’t count Masters of Horror since I only saw them on DVD. Toying with the idea of getting the Hammer House of Horror and Thriller box sets since I think I really enjoyed the shows when they were on TV many moons ago. Saw a couple of episodes of HHH on TV recently and thought they were still OK.
I’m something of a military buff but there’s little in that genre either. Band of Brothers didn’t air on terrestrial TV here but I’m going to grab the blu ray box set and I’ll get the Pacific at some point too. I enjoyed Tour of Duty but was usually watching through an alcoholic haze so my judgement might be impaired on that. BBC’s Rome was good, if a bit hampered by its budget. 20th Century Battlefields was good.

Really didn’t like Buffy. Way too glossy and teenage. Even though the first few seasons take place during high school and therefore to a degree the series of course will be a bit "teenage," I couldn't disagree more about the show but to each their own, of course.

My all-time favourite is The Wire, which I may start a thread on down the line. I missed The Sopranos first time around, but Sky Atlantic (here in the UK) have been showing them from the beginning (now in season 6), and I've thoroughly enjoyed catching-up. Homeland was really good; not sure how they'll handle season 2. I have been a big fan of Doctor Who (Classic and nu-Who), but I've not enjoyed what Moffat's done with the series. Enjoyed both series of Walking Dead, including the much-maligned farmbound section. Have seen S1 of Breaking Bad, and eagerly anticipate the arrival of S2 on DVD. Found that Sons of Anarchy grew stale very quickly. Dexter, Braquo and Romanzo Criminale are on my to-watch list. Someone mentioned The Inbetweeners upthread (on edit - it was gurumatt), and that's really worth a watch. The Simpsons pressed the self-destruct button some time ago, and, for my money, qualifies as "most depresssing cultural artefact of all time".

I have to agree and say the 90's Outer Limits was amazing and still stands strong. Even the original was a good show and miles better than The Twilight Zone.
