I just picked up the SFX magazine top 100 scifi/fantasy/horror movies readers' poll. Only four horror(ish) movies made it into the top 20: Alien, Aliens, The Thing and Ghostbusters. All were Lovecraft-inspired. I wonder if that means something.

As the HPLHS produced Whisper, filming it like a 30s talkie, I suspect the same care and love went into this production, though members of the society are willing to admit a few liberties were taken to fill up a feature running time. And the preview I saw last year looks terrific. It's on my must buy list, once I can scrape up the extra cash.
It's a great adaptation, definitely worth a watch and it looks awesome on Blu-Ray, those guys really love their HPL.

A really enjoyable podcast. I'm a big fan of HPL and it's good to see him discussed with so much admiration. He's an author who is well known among horror fans and his work has been a great influence on a lot of todays horror/SF. And yet to the 'man in the street' he seems to be unknown. It's a pity he isn't more lauded.

I’ve tended to avoid screen adaptations of HPL’s work. The impact of his work depends so heavily upon the nightmarish concepts and doom-laden atmosphere he creates, rather than a straightforward plot, that I think anyone trying to successfully adapt stories for the screen is facing a tough job. Most adaptations I have seen have been disappointing. I really like Re-Animator, even though it doesn’t carry any of the grim weight of HPL’s stories, because it’s such a wild ride. I’ve yet to see Dagon and The Beyond . Dreams in the Witch House was OK but messed with the story. The Resurrected (the Charles Dexter Ward movie) was mostly dull. Saw In the Mouth of Madness and the Unnameable years ago; I think I enjoyed the former but the latter has left the impression of just another generic 80s horror flick. And only partly squamous! Love that page. You could almost construct your own HPL story just using those wonderful words.
