Dear friends,
I would like to take a moment to say “thanks” for all the kind and enthusiastic support that everyone has been showing to me, with the release of “terror of Dracula” and the exciting new opportunities that seem to be presenting themselves every week. Where any of this goes is beyond me, at present – but I am enjoying the opportunity to create and share, and (to some degree) being recognized for the work I have been chipping-away at for over 15 years.
That being said, I also feel that I need to apologize to you, both faithful and casual listeners alike, for what I know has been a less-than-stellar performance on the Horror Etc Podcast for several months. This has been evidenced by my increasing absences on recent episodes, and what one listener has (most-likely rightly) referred to as a lack of input. I am aware of it, and it has weighed on my conscience for quite some time now. I recently had a heart-to-heart with Ted about my involvement with the show, and was touched by his understanding and flexibility. Without Ted, this show would never happen – he has been the brains of the operation for the 5 year run, and develops most of the show’s content / produces the final product each and every week… all the while looking after his wonderful family, and maintaining a career outside of the podcasting world. Ted is an incredible friend, and a better person than he will ever admit to being ;-) His quiet support of my own artistic career pursuits – if not always spoken – have been so obvious to me, especially over the past year and change. That’s great friendship, and I often worry that I am letting him down, as well as you – the Horror Etc family.
Sometimes Doug is now Moretimes Doug, and he is doing a great job on the show (and I know I’m not in the minority) – and our other occasional guest-hosts have also been a welcome addition to circle… in fact, I have become just as much a listener of Horror Etc in recent weeks, as a contributor! It’s a great show, with a great tried / tested and true formula – and that successful combination will continue, even if the torch is passed into different hands.
There’s not enough of me to go around, I fear. The film work is very time-consuming, and thankfully there is no end in sight. Since Dracula was completed, I started work on a couple of different projects. I can share this now, after the fact: I came VERY close to helming and starring in a new Dr. Phibes film this summer… it fell apart due to a disagreement over a pitiful amount of money with the copyright owners (shame – but we walked away with principles intact) – I hope I get another crack at it down the road. This week, I start work on an original haunted-house flick called “The Ghostkeepers”. It already has a guaranteed distribution deal, and I look forward to sharing it with you in Spring of next year. There is another HUGE project getting closer and closer to becoming a reality – I’m REALLY excited about that one! So all this work is a full-time job in and of itself, and on top of it, I have a full-time day job to help pay the bills and give me that comforting level of security as I pursue these other wild ambitions… I’m maxed-out, folks, and I am so sorry if it seems I’ve jumped the shark with our favourite podcast… if it seems I have, rest assured it’s not on account of any loss of love for the show, Ted or YOU.
This isn’t a “goodbye”, by any stretch of the imagination, as I do hope to continue to appear on the program as it ventures into its SIXTH year, perhaps more in the air of one-off specials. We survived five years (and are still going strong). Wow – what an accomplishment for a podcast, and I am so proud to have played such a part in its good fortune. Without HETC, my life would be the paler for the friends I have made in this community. Also, were it not for this fine program, I would never have met Bill Bossert, long-time listener-come-producer of my films and writing partner (and someone I am proud to call a dear friend)… so in a major and direct way, Horror Etc has helped me towards realizing my own dreams… I will forever be in its debt and yours - friends.
Long live Horror Etc!
For the fans, BY the fans!!
I can’t wait to see what’s cooking in the next episode ;-)
Cheers for now,
-Anthony
