Caught a preview of You're Next and was disappointed. Shaky cam aside (seriously, when did film schools stop teaching how to use a tripod?), the film has a great start, but suddenly turns into a typical action film by the second half. Sure, the fights are bloody and brutal, but the film is drained of any feeling of suspense or terror. You can read my full review at my blog, The Shadow Over Portland. Also, I finally finished up my series on the Final Destination franchise. And much like the other films, Final Destination 5 rewrites everything in order to top the previous entries. Still, the opening disaster is terrific and a few of the kills are surprising. But the ending has to go and really destroy any continuity with the previous films. You can read my full review at my blog, The Shadow Over Portland.

Ah, I really liked "You're Next". I thought the comedy in it was great.

Lots of other critics disagree with my opinion. You might get a kick out of it. I will say, the action is pretty brutal. How's the laptop issue coming?

We'll the good news is the forum updates mean I'm able to get on with my phone now. But not sure about movie night yet, I'll look into it..
While I'm here I watched Maniac tonight (the remake) I thought it was really good. I had a similar feeling at the end as I did with the original and I also can't believe how well the first person stuff worked. Its up there as one of my favourite remakes for sure

Might be tough, but we can also use Yahoo Messenger to watch a DVD everyone has, so that might work. Let me know if you have any questions or when you're ready to sign in!

Yeah, I was always a fan of Nightwatch and Daywatch. I find them to be pretty refreshingly original in a time we're drowning in remakes. Great visual films.

Evil Dead (2013). Was sooo looking forward to this. Picked up the BR as soon as it was released, watched it immediately and … was slightly disappointed. I’m not sure why. I appreciated the practical effects and the high gore quotient and, since I wasn’t expecting much from the plot, I was pleasantly surprised by the direction things went. However, a couple of the characters were nothing more than cardboard cut-outs waiting to be ripped apart and I felt some of it was rushed. I need to watch it again.
Jack Brooks Monster Slayer. Robert Englund is the star here but I have to say I don’t understand how so many horror fans can rate this so highly. It has serious pacing issues. Pretty much nothing happens for an hour and, when it does, it’s nothing new or particularly interesting.
The Fly and Fly II. Not seen these for ages. The first one still one works well but the dated “evil corporation” vibe of the sequel evoked yawns. As for the gore, the body horror (acid vomit, head-crushing etc) still hold up well but movies both are let down by the clunky creature effects. This is a franchise ripe for a reboot.
Castle Freak. A Full Moon direct—to-video effort from the 90s. An American inherits a castle in Italy wherein the son of the previous owner still resides … Good monster make-up, a fair amount of gore and a sound performance from Jeffrey COMBS make this worth watching.
Poltergeist. Long time no see. For the first 90 minutes I found it quite boring. It just came across as a cuddly ET-like movie. But it changed in the last half hour and became more of a genuine horror flick, a couple of the jump-scares caught me out and I always appreciate a good submerged corpse!

I have been hosting a horror movie night with friends every Friday night, been on a classics kick lately I Walked With a Zombie, Bride of Frankenstein and tonight we are watching the new Criterion release of The Uninvited which a big favorite of mine that till now I have only had on VHS till now. Thanks to others singing the praises I just bought The Battery unseen and hope to watch it soon. And right around Halloween a local theater was having a horror festival and I got to see original Frankenstein, Dracula, Wicker Man (new footage), The Shining and Nightmare On Elm Street on a big Cinerama screen.

I am planning on reading Thomas Harris's Silence of the lambs, watching Sixth Sense, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and H.G. Well's Invisible man TV series that I found in my library.

Have watched Return of the living dead 1,2 and am halfway through 3... They are fun and Ive enjoyed them somewhat but not as much as I expected to. I get the feeling the nostalgia has carried me through. that said I was pretty tired when I watched them so I may get more out of them another time.
