to people who don't like the first 2 hellraisers: did you see the sequels first then watched the original? of course everyone's entitled to their opinion but i can't understand why horror fans don't like this movie. isn't originality a big perk, especially in the horror genre? Not to be introduce negativity into the thread, but since you asked, I'm not really a fan of Hellraiser and I haven't seen any of the sequels. There are certainly some original ideas and I'm a fan of Clive Barker as a writer--the Books of Blood contain some of the best horror stories ever written, in my opinion. My problem is that the cinematic execution feels pretty standard and his mediocrity as a director really undercuts the story. If a more visionary filmmaker had adapted the material it might have been one of my favorites, but as it is I just see it as wasted potential.

I think I should re-visit these myself actually. If found the first one a little slow to be honest, the second one was great and the 3rd one was a perfect example of 90's cheesiness, I even like the 4th one, it was a good example of how a prequel can be really effective but it has been some time since ive seen any of them. would love to hear an episode on them.

Thinking this should just a Barker episode with prose, plays, art and films . . . just cover HELLRAISER 1-4 as those all received proper theatical releases . . . all the other films were (for the most part) existing scripts that were tweaked and tailored to accomodate PINHEAD. . . when you view the films that way, to direct-to-video ones really don't add to the mythos of the Cenobites.

I'd love to hear Hellraiser discussed! Clive Barker has contibuted so much for horror fans: The Books of Blood (the books, perhaps, instead of the questionable movie versions of the stories), The Thief of Always (the book that SHOULD be a movie), and the often underestimated Nightbreed (a charming movie with an appearance by D. Cronenberg). Listeners can do some homework, too, by checking out Barker's amazing artwork.
Additionally, a quick flip through his book A-Z of Horror could yield future podcast ideas.

the first two are the best in my view....but i will watch anything with pin head in it! The DVD of the first film has a great audio track with Clive barker where he explains why he will never direct a horror movie again . Clive Barker is a great talent and a Dedicated show would be the way to go in my opinion.....not so keen on his more recent stuff but just look at how many movies have been made from the books of blood and Mister B. Gone is a great read.

Caught Hellraiser: Revelations yesterday. Couple of spoilt American teens (surely not?) vacation in Tijuana seeking ultimate thrills. I won't spoil but, on the plus side, the plot sees a return to some of the original themes that were absent in most of the later sequels, the make-up is good and at around 75 minutes it doesn’t outstay its welcome. However, this is really poorly scripted, badly acted and the sub for Doug Bradley is apparently two American guys - one doing a crazy-eyed gurning routine while another delivers the appalling dialog in a rather irritating style. Bradley never really brought much to the role but surely they could have found one man that can do an English accent while keeping a straight face?
OK, so it’s well-known that this was a rush-job made to keep the rights to the franchise. Nevertheless, I don’t rate this as the worst entry in the series. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve gamely ploughed through the whole damned lot and have formed the view that 1 to 5 are in varying states of OK; 6 is unforgivably dull; 7 is pure drivel and 8 (the one with Lance) is kind of a cheat and very shit indeed.
In my opinion, it’s somewhat different to other more successful franchises, and not just because so many of the sequels are rubbish. You need to go into this knowing that Pinhead is not the same kind of villain as, say, Freddy or Jason. He isn’t usually stalking and slashing generic teenagers (at least he isn’t meant to be) and is often little more than a cameo. But that’s OK. After all, who needs another Freddy? I think there’s life in Hellraiser and I’d like to see a serious reboot. But they’ll either need to re-enlist Bradley or invest in a convincing replacement. And, really, how difficult can that be?

The Hellraiser franchise and I have been locked in a mortal stare-down for well over a year now with neither side apparently willing to flinch. I want to tackle these films but it's very daunting. Good to hear some moderately positive comments for the new installment especially considering the motives behind it.

I probably havent watched them properly since I owned the first 4 on vhs... I did however purchase the boxset of the first 3 movies not so long ago and am working on getting the rest, so I might finally do it. Love that boxset though.

Would love to hear Ted and Tony tackle a Clive Barker episode, a few earlier movies like candyman, hellraiser 1 + 2, nightbreed then a few newer ones midnight meat train, book of blood and the new hellraiser would be excellent listening. I would love this but as has been mentioned before some of the Hellraisers movies are hard to get through.

Sorry forgot to say I did not really like the new Hellraiser (did not hate it though), felt like a mix between hellraiser and funny games. I also did not really like the new pinhead, not sure if it was because it was not Doug Bradley playing him or I had a problem with the actual actor

Hellraiser is my slasher series of choice, no matter how poorly they work to shovel Pinhead in there, I'm there. Also have tracked down the novels/comics associated with them, a real highlight is Pinhead versus Marshal Law drawn by the excellent Kevin O'Neill. Haven't gotten a chance to see the new one but if Doug Bradley said no, man, it's gotta be bad. Actually have a small model of the Lament Configuration around here somewhere.

A discussion of the first two films would be awesome. I can understand why there are fans of the rest, but man, the quality drops off hard after Part II. The first two make the most sense anyways, since they're so closely connected and have many returning characters.
