Has Angel Heart ever been discussed on the podcast? I was wondering what everyone thought of it.

Hated it! I can't stand any film when I can guess the ending after the first 10 minutes. Louis Cypher? C'mon. That's why I also hated The Sixth Sense.

I've not seen Angel Heart since it's theatrical run. I liked it then.

SPOILER WARNING Given that at the time of the film's release, it was widely publicized that Robert DeNiro was playing the Devil, I'm not sure how much of a suprise they meant that to be. Of course the biggest controversy was over a Cosby Kid having sex... I think the film is solid stylistically, and the performances were good, but will admit the narrative was weak.

Angel Heart is a great film...brooding atmosphere and a sizzling performance by Mickey Rourke. The end result might never be in doubt, but getting there is one hell of a ride !!!

I really liked Angel Heart.
That weird image of the kid at the end still sticks with me.

To be fair, I don't think that De Niro being the Devil was the true twist at the end. The true twist at the end was that Harry Angel was Johnny Favorite.

C'mon! De Niro's creepy egg-eating acting! I love this film, don't think guessing the ending spoils the enjoyment of the film as a whole. I'd like to see Louis Cyphre take on John Milton from Devil's Advocate in a Heat-style showdown . . .

I thought it was one of the best takes on the Faustus legend there's ever been.
Interestingly enough, it seems that "Faustus" was something of a stage name for the C16th century magician who was the (possible) basis of the legend (a guy whose real name was Georg Sabel). It meant "lucky". So, "Johann Faustus" = "Lucky John", which kind of dovetails neatly with Johnny Favourite...

I wish I had had a more sophisticated and intelligent reaction than "thank goodness it was Denise and not Rudy - now that would have been totally wrong!"

I don't have any strong memories of the film, although I agree that DeNiro's portrayal was creepy...the last bit with him and his contact lenses gave me goose bumps at the time. I agree that the twist was not supposed to be that he was lucifer, but rather who Rourke's character was supposed to be. Very atmospheric film though...I remember the Louisiana setting influencing me heavily in my writing for a year or so afterwards.
My recollection is that whatever merits the film may have had were completely overshadowed by the rather trivial media-generated "controversy" over Lisa Bonet's sex scene.

L liked the film (didn't guess the ending!). The book it's based on is even better.
