And as a bonus question - does anybody think Season 6 will be the last (and don't state it as a fact or I might confidently lose another mars bar from a colleague... I'm not made of Mars bars you know?) Hmm... We could do with a Dexter Smilie Scary Gary, but I think Frankenstein is a suitable compromise - Dex would approve.

This season should have been the last. Season four was stronger than five, though I did enjoy five. I'd rather see the show end on a strong note than drag it's aging corpse along like Six Feet Under.
I expect they'll leave it open ended when they finally wrap it up.

I think Deb will discover Dex's secret and let him continue (maybe even support him indirectly).
I looked for a picture to make a Dexter smiley, but every one I found looked too goofy. If you find a picture you like, I'll convert it and make one.

Just because a series didn't match its peak doesn't mean the story wasn't worth the telling. Most tv series hit their apex in the third or fourth seasons, but for good series the comedown tends to be slow. As long as they can maintain this general level, I'm fine with it.

Deb dies (she can, no kids). Dexter avenges and gets caught.
In the public's eyes he is viewed as a hero... somehow, someway, to uphold our belief in Dexter that what he has been doing is for the most part a good thing.

Is that what we're supposed to be believing? The writers have steered me towards the Dexter Kool-Aid. I've been downing the purple stuff since the first episode.

Gotta add here (HE inspires). How bout Deb catches Dexter. She is murdered soon after. He avenges. Dark Passenger satisfied, it leaves Dexter, so he can live on fine tuning the upbringing of his children...exactly as Deb, Rita, and Harry would have wanted all along.

Poor Debs has had a lot of tragedy in her life... I want her to have a happy ending, she deserves one... For want of a better word Debs is the 'hero' of the piece. I'd be unsatisfied with her being killed even if Dexter avenges her.
I'm going to have to disagree that we're meant to think what Dexter is doing is a good thing... His choice of victims certainly makes things more palatable for us... But as I said in the episode post - Dexter does what he does because he enjoys it, the fact he's bumping off baddies is simply in response to his survival code...
...I am doubting myself even as I type this though... He is evolving... Always has been... On the couple of occasions he's come across someone who has hurt children for example you do get the impression he IS acting out of anger and revenge there and not his serial-killing instinct.
God it's a complicated show isn't it?
