Look at directors who have worked in horror, but are not usually associated with the genre: - Mike Nichols' WOLF - Neil Jordan's COMPANY OF WOLVES/INTERVIEW - Danny Boyle's 28 Weeks Later - Robert Wise's AUDREY ROSE/HAUNTING - Howard Hawks' THING - J. Lee Thompson's HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME - Kubrick's SHINING
Any more to add?

Coppola's DRACULA Branagh's FRANKENSTEIN
(UGHH on both . . . )
Maybe why non-genre directors are sometimes not as successful?

Stuart Rosenberg, best known as the director of Cool Hand Luke, did the original Amityville Horror. And of course Robert Wise did The Haunting and got his start under Val Lewton with films like The Body Snatcher.

One to be added: Robert Zemeckis with 2000's "What Lies Beneath."
