So, De Palma is an auteur in many senses, covering various genres including gangster, war, suspense and horror . . . so, how about just the DePalma horror titles: SISTERS, PHANTOM OF PARADISE, THE FURY, CARRIE, DRESSED TO KILL, RAISING CAIN . . . Here are the reasons: 1. I know Tony has been JONESING for a PHANTOM episode and more people NEED to see this film 2. You gotta love Margot Kidder in Sisters - strange, twisted, bizarre and underappreciated 3. Lithgow was praised widely by you all for DEXTER, well you should see him in BLOW-OUT and RAISING CAIN 4. This would work well with your HITCH-centric episodes for various reasons 5. DePalma was (at one time) thrown in with Spielberg, Lucas, Scorsese and Coppola as the "film brats" - I still contend his older work holds up - this would be a great one for all three of you - please consider it - it would be one subject you all could get into - trust me on this! 6. CARRIE could have its own commentary track from you two - it still remains a brutal template for horror working with the tortures of adolescence. AMICUS

I second this idea! Blow Out was an ignored classic, and needs to be discussed

I agree. Dressed to Kill, also, is a masterpiece. Plus, it's interesting to re-watch after you know the twist ending to see how the film steers the viewer onto the identity of the killer. Don't forget Body Double. All these films came at a time when it seemed DePalma was the heir apparent to Hitchcock. Good stuff.

As good a film as it is on a dramatic level, Carrie has always disappointed me as a horror film, probably compounded because it tweaked the details of a extremely slim book; theres enough you could expand on without a) having only the school destroyed rather than the town in sheer carnage, b) having the mother stabbed a lot rather than her heart stopped (if all you were after was another set piece Brian, see a) for ideas) and c) having THAT ending, though I probably only take umbrage with that due to it popularising the surprise jolt ending (hello Friday, Nightmare et al). Though it naturally wins points for the whole enjoyment of watching the underdog get revenge, be it knocking over a child on a bike or wiping out most of a generation of a small town in the space of an hour or two.
