Just got to listening to the podcast today. As always it was a great listen and I'm pretty excited to check out The Troll Hunter when the opportunity comes up. One question I had is whether or not some wires got crossed between the plotlines of Rec and Quarantine. I seem to remember the possession storyline being part of the original Spanish film. I'm pretty sure this is the case since I never saw Quarantine, although I have read enough about it that I might be the one remembering it all wrong. Any one else remember anything about this? Either way, Rec 2 is a must-see for me. Thanks Tony and Ted! Not seen Quarantine either but I’m pretty sure that in Rec some Vatican trouble-shooter was investigating a disease/virus that causes demonic possession. We need someone who’s seen both to put us right.

Yes Ted did seem to have gotten confused a little there I think, in the original Rec demonic possession was always the explanation too - there was no change in rec 2 (even though it was massively expanded on and we saw more concrete 'possession'). It was quarantine that dropped this idea.

Finally got to listen at work (thank you quiet night) and have a new list of movies to find. Definitely want to see Cropsey and Troll Hunter! Who can go wrong with giant trolls! The "found footage" type(?) of film isn't really my thing but Jim Henson trolls? Gotta see! Great podcast as always!

Rec was always demonic possession. In the very end in the final room there are all kinds of clippings on the wall about possession and exorcism. In Quarantine, the clippings are about terrorism and viruses. That's pretty much the main difference between both films, I found the final monster in Rec creepier.

I'm not sure what was creepier - the possessed girl, or her dirty undies.
REC remains one of the best films of the 00s, and while I didn't find REC2 as good, it is certainly good enough.

[Rec] is one of my all-time favourite horror movies and while I thought [rec]2 was pretty good it wasn't a patch on the first film. The premise of following the swat team was interesting (even if they did suffer from a case of the stupids at certain moments) but I absolutely hated the subplot with the teenagers . Their storyline sucked the tension out of the story and felt as if it was only inserted to pad out the running time. Not only were the teenagers annoying, dumb characters but their plot line served absolutely no purpose whatsoever (spoiler follows) The net result of the teenagers' story is the 'interrogation' scene which could have been accomplished with any of the other residents who were still running around the apartment block

Just fished this one out of the archives for a listen - great episode! - and here's my £0.02 on the Rec plotline controversy.
The ending of Rec makes clear that the source of the outbreak is the girl (as was) in the penthouse apartment, who was a victim of demonic possession. The Vatican agent who rented the apartment was experimenting upon her to try to isolate the agent that allows demonic forces entry to her body; to his horror he discovers that it's contagious, and the decision to seal her up in the apartment is taken.
The virus is definitely "supernatural" in origin; I think Ted may have got the idea of it being "rabies" from the fact that the outbreak is detected by the authorities as a result of Max, the little girl's dog, being infected and going berserk at the vets.

The idea could also have come from Quarantine, where it was super rabies that had been created as a weapon of mass destruction.

The idea could also have come from Quarantine, where it was super rabies that had been created as a weapon of mass destruction. Thanks for the info; I hadn't realised that. I've never seen Quarantine, having read from multiple sources that it's a very inferior remake of the original. Having said that, I've heard many people disparage the US version of Ring in comparison with Ringu. Whereas I'd have to say that the Japanese version is the superior one, I've a great fondness for the remake, and I'd say it holds its own as a piece of horror cinema, so maybe I'll give Quarantine a go one of these days.

It's not horrible, but I do prefer Rec. That said, Quarantine 2 is one of those amazingly awful films that I really enjoy watching.

I like Rec but hate rec 2 except the ending. I could not get past how stupid the swat team were and did not like the way they split the movie first following one group and then the end. I did like the expansion of the possession story line though. As far as Rec vs Quarantine goes I prefer Rec but what I remember most people online at the time preferred the one they saw first as they are very similar. I saw rec first.

Rec 2 was good, made me nearly lose my lunch with that whole...slug/worm thingy.
I could see where you prefer whichever one you saw first. I saw Rec the night before Quarantine, and between that and all the praise I had heard about Rec in the year before I was able to see it, it was hard not to love that one just a little bit more. Now, I can't what to see part 3, which I think will be a fun ride.
