OK-I’m going to jump in here with a more favorable viewpoint… While the show seems to be style over substance, I have to say, I’m responding to the aesthetic being presented. The characters are not likeable or even relatable; the viewer is very much kept at a distance from the flawed characters and their ugly world. This is, perhaps, revealing something about me, but I'm satisfied to sit back and watch the story unfold with no emotional investment required (or foisted on me through meaningful glances and sappy dialog so often employed in artless attempts to layer in meaning or depth). The dark humor is hitting the spot for me, too. As the history of the house’s former occupants come to light, I’m finding myself intrigued. I have a sense that the story is crafted to completion by the writers; they aren’t just winging it and we won’t be left hanging. (At least I hope that I’m in good hands here, but I’ve been wrong before –cough cough - Lost). It would be interesting for the show come back for a second season with a new set of occupants in the house. Maybe the current cast could become part of the history, hence, make appearances as ghosties in the next round. In general, I think horror on TV is great for the genre, especially in light of the fact that theatrical releases have been limited to lower-risk movies such as sequels and re-makes . AHS lacks the tension and honest to goodness scares of The Walking Dead, but it’s keeping me entertained so far. to be to the point, you are in the majority ... most critics love it and heard on horrorphilia's mavens of horror #2 talk about it with raving glory. Good stuff. There are a number of critics who were not impressed by the show from the pilot onward thus far and think it needs major retooling in order to get better.

I found the Halloween episodes quite good, though again this has more to do with secondary characters and the ghosts (Zachary Quinto was amazing) than the Harmon family. I heard a rumor that each season will have a different family in the home and I'm kinda hoping this turns out to be true.

Anytime you're more interested in the ghosts than the family they're haunting doesn't bode well for a show/movie. Here's hoping it's true and the next family is able to generate a bit more sympathy. Oh god, just had a horrid thought. If the Harmons end up as ghosts in the house, I'm done with it.

I just want them to answer some damn questions they keep bringing up (only 4 episodes in). They need to stop throwing more shit at the screen without wrapping anything else.

What questions? I think they've got to some things quite quick. The only real question for me is whats with the guy in the suit?

My favorite new show! The only real question for me is whats with the guy in the suit? They told who he is and his plans in last week's episode. I for one am glad the gimp from Pulp Fiction got another job. (kidding)

Rubberman will finally be revealed next week. Guesses, anyone? Its been mentioned that it's someone we've seen on the show before, so if it's not the husband's, then there's no one really left but Larry. I'm probably wrong but I just can't buy that a ghost knocked Vivian up.

I just finished "Piggy, Piggy" and I gotta say, this show is sort of addictive. ALl the criticisms leveled at it are fair and correct, but just for the imagery and excellent guest/cameos actors (Zachary Quinto was good and it was great to see Zoe Greystone from Caprica), it's sort of awesome. I'm also interested in the very different take on ghosts in this show. The fact that (some) of the ghosts seem to actually age is interesting. So yeah, it's not perfect, but for cheap thrills and fun I'm still onboard with it.

I'm disappointed by the Rubberman reveal but looking back I guess there was no one else it could've been.

I just watched the whole season on iTunes over the last week, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Some of the criticisms I've seen here about it being cliche are justified, but over all the show was a lot of fun. My only real gripe was that they had the perfect ending scene about 10 minutes before the actual end of the last episode. The ending of the last episode was total crap, and it made me think they were going in a really stupid direction for season 2. However, since then I've read that season 2 is going to be a completely differently haunting, and I approve of that approach whole heartedly. The story about this family and this house was fun, but had been taken as far as I was interested in following it.

yeah, crap ending. This series was just about atmosphere and jump scares and creepy ideas so I think it's good that they're leaving this all behind for a new direction. I read an article that made a good point that the series needs a better idea of what makes it work. Like, the stuff with the school shooting was pretty terrifying, the franken-baby, less so...

Well, I stuck with it all the way so it must have had something going for it but there were too many ghosts and too much going on to take it seriously. And I'm guessing the final ep with the new family was intended as an homage to Beetlejuice??
As others have said, there was some good stuff in there. For the next season maybe they need to figure out what bits worked this time and develop them, rather than throw everthing onto the screen scattershot style.

EW reports Joseph Fiennes, Chloe Sevigny, and James Cromwell will star in American Horror Story season two.
I like the sound of that!

I really liked the first series. (Yes, 'series'. Suck it up, Atlanticists ( , btw)). No loose ends, no cheats, and not entirely sympathetic leads. Of course, any ghost story is going to have some 'but if ghosts can interact by xyz-ing why don't they just lmn'? moments. But quibbling over these is like quibbling over minions not being able to shoot James Bond. One frequent complaint is an unsympathetic lead family. Eh? Nonsense. A teenage daughter with questionable boyfriend - uhm, she's a teenage girl. A husband and wife who don't magically heal their relationship after many months but allow bitterness to fester and affect them a year or two later - wtf is not 'sympathetic' about that realism? As to the identity of the gimp - any horror that favours an 'eugh! FFS' over an 'aargh!' is. surely, a brilliant touch. An effective 'eugh' is more horrific than any 'aargh'.
