So Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a surprising success both in the US and overseas. This is a film no one was expecting to be a hit, and yet it is likely going to be the most well liked film of the summer. If there is anything that Hollywood does, it is copy the success of others. The problem lies in figuring out why it was a success. What lesson will studios take from Rise?
NOTE: Grrr... first choice should read "audiences will pay for WELL made 2D movies

Hollywood will see this as proof that "Any Which Way But Loose" needs a remake, but darker and edgier with a CGI Clyde. Also, that King Kong needs a reboot, but this time it needs to be darker and edgier and in 3D. Megan Fox will play Ann Darrow, Taylor Launter will play Jack Driscoll. It will have more CGI than the Peter Jackson the movie. Finally, they will reboot Green Lantern, this time as a monkey. This version will be darker and edgier, with an entirely CGI ape Green Lantern who carries as a gun and dispenses his own brand of blood soaked justice. It will be in 3D and Smell-o-Rama and cost 500 million dollars to make. Jack Nicholson with voice the Ape Green Lantern.
What they will NOT do is remake Murders in the Rue morgue. Edgar Allen Poe? Puleeeeeze! Unless . . . unless we can have a Matrix-like gun battle and set it in a dystopian Paris of the future. . . . BINGO! New Blade Runner movie! Buy all the rights!

As much as I'd like to say Hollywood would learn that audiences want smart, well made movies (2 or 3D), I have to go with the monkeys. Expect the apes to flood the market. Only this time, they'll SPARKLE!

Does anyone know if there are any plans to make more Planet of the Apes films in the near future?

Yep, a followup is forthcoming. Not much details, and the release date is still in the air, but it looks like sometime next summer or fall.
