What was, for a period of time in my early teens, my favourite TV show ever surely deserves a look at, as there are many standout 'Horror' and horror-inspired episodes:
Squeeze/Tooms (One of the most iconic episodes) The Host (Nice monster episode) Humbug (Freaks-style episode) Home (The Hills Have Eyes/TCM/Deliverance-style episode) The Post Modern Prometheus (Frankenstein-inspired classic)
Other notables involve cannibalism, werewolves, baby-stealing demons, black-market organ gambling and a lizard stuck in a rock.

I don't know that a full series retrospective would be neccesary, but a look back at some of the better horror -themed episodes (mostly the ones you note) would be kind of cool.

I've recently started re-watching the X-Files, no real plan or schedule in mind but just checking out the occasional episode whenever I have the time. I think I watched up until the third season when the show was first broadcast, I liked the whole 'monster of the week' format for a while but lost track around when Scully got pregnant (?) and Fox was replaced by the T-1000.
So what did I miss? Did the show continue for much longer? Did it develop a more coherent plot arc? Did it have an actual ending or was the left to the two films? From what I hear it seemed to drop the monsters in favour of constantly focussing on alien abductions which sounds kind of a shame.

In my opinion, it carried on strong up to the movie (released between seasons 5 and 6). After that, the main alien story arc really started to fall apart. The monster of the week episodes after this point were not bad in my opinion, but the change from the darker and gloomier Vancouver film location to the sunnier L.A. location didn't help things. Once Duchovny's absence in the later shows was terminal, but the show still continued on life support. I watched it to the end, but I really cannot recall too much that was good. The final season brings back Duchovny for a handful of episodes, but by this time the show has worn way too thin. The series finale was not very good or memorable.

I think selecting just a few episodes from different eras would be AWESOME. That one with the inbred family, the Millennium crossover/launch, The smoking man episode, a Doggit episode, etc... wrapping with the films? Maybe an episode of The Long Gunmen. I think that would be a blast (did you lke how I show-horned Millennium in there?).

I loved the first season of the XFiles and carried on watching for several more seasons, but got really fed up with it by the time of the first film, and from then on only watched the occasional episode. I wonder what good episodes I've missed.

Yeah, anyone who complains that the LOST staff were full of shit really need to see how badly Chris Carter handled the end of the X-Files. It is clear he either never knew how to end the alien-consipracy story, or screwed it up so badly by tossing on twist after twist after twist for an extra 4 seasons that there was no way to fix it. The new agents weren't bad, IMO, but by the time they came on the writers were retreading old ideas, and trying to squeeze the last bit of juice from the conspiracy fruit. The finale is widely considered one of the worst in television history, and I suspect a good reason why the fandom imploded after the show ended, and the second film tanked at the box office (even though I didn't think it was half bad).

There is the Explodey Files podcast with two of the guys (Steve and Matt) from Splattercast plus Explodey Jo, who are doing an episode by episode look the XFiles. It's okay.

I think they made the first 5 seasons in Canada but then David Duchovny lobbied to have the show move to LA for the last 4 seasons that's why you see a lot of Hollywood "stars" appear in the show from season 6 onwards.

Such as one of the most enjoyable episodes from season 7 (I think), Hollywood A.D, where the show takes a postmodern turn and has an X-Files movie take place in the show.
