Once more we return to the zompocalypse world of The Walking Dead. We have devoted an episode to season one of the AMC adaptation previously but this time it’s a wall to wall exploration of the storyline that has unfolded since 2003 from issue 1 of the comic book to present. Special guest host Mindy sits in to discuss the timeline, plot twists, underlying themes and jaw-dropping shock moments of the series and share thoughts on how the television version has lived up thus far to the original concept. There are spoilers! The intention here was to have a conversion re-living the story of The Walking Dead to date to share with those who have followed the comic series, however the speculations and reveals of what lies ahead of the TV series cannot be confirmed as spoilers thanks to the twists the writers have taken so far. So fair warning to those who have only experienced the show, but we do feel the plot twists are as likely to not happen as being spoiled. A compare and contrast of the comic to show is done but focused primarily on the characters of the story and how they differ, as well as the intriguing new characters introduced. It’s an open floor discussion of TWD that we hope infects you with our passion for this great series. Huge thanks to Mindy for making this show happen. As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324

Ive made it as far as volume 13 in the books.. are the later spoilers late on in the episode or would I just be best leaving this until I get caught up?

We talked all the way up to the most current issue. You probably should wait until you're caught up if you don't like spoilers.

I just started listening to the podcast a few episodes ago and enjoy it very much. Thank you!
I suspect I'm one of the few Shane 'fans' out there (from the TV series) but after the last episode I think I'm sold. It seems most of the criticism directed at the character is based on a 'pre-apocalypse' morality and it isn't clear such a morality is appropriate in the world they find themselves in.
Further, Shane (perhaps to a greater extent than the other characters - except maybe for Andrea) appears to be suffering from some serious PTSD and if viewed from that perspective begin to make more sense. The comic shows this aspect even more across all the characters but looking at them through the lens of people who have gone through incredible trauma and how they react and recover from it (or not) can provide some interesting insight.
I'd also suggest the series won't allow Rick (the TV character) to fall as far as Rick (the comic character) in terms of moral collapse. Shane, therefore, takes the role of Rick's alter ego. Sacrificing anything (and anyone) for himself and (more importantly) 'his' family (Lori and Gregg).
Great stuff!

Great job on the talk, but not quite up to the latest issue if I figured right. I think you made it through volume 14 of the softcovers, book 7 of the hardcovers, and I think that would put you to issue 84 of the comic itself. I think they're almost up to 90 now. Anyway, I would definately avoid because there are serious spoilers for what comes in issues 80-84.

You reveal that **** and **** hook up, ****, ****, **** and **** get killed, and **** gets ****! In lightly I meant much less time was devoted to the last 20 issues as opposed to the first 70. And yes we spoiled the **** out of it as the warning states at the outset of the episode.

Yeah, I'm Mindy. While I haven't read the most recent comics, I have read the synopsis, mainly because I had to see what happened to one of the major characters. I started buying the hardcover books, so the geek in me just has to keep buying those consistency, instead of the comics as they're released.

As I mentioned elsewhere, what happens to **** in Book 7 caused me to gasp audibly, something I have never done reading a comic the past 35 years (and to my knowlege, something I haven't done reading novels, and rarely done watching film and TV). So, yeah, I had to sneak a peek too. Because Franco got me into Dark Discussions, it got my wife listening to that podcast, which got me to (finally) get her to listen to Horror Etc. I had to warn her not to listen to this ep, because she has only just started reading the WD books.

Misted, had I not been Curled up on my couch with the book, I probably would have dropped it. That was crazy, and for it to be a full-page spread, there was no way to miss the impact. Definitely a smart move on the part of the artist.

I'm midway through the episode and am saving the rest for the long drive home Thursday. Excellent insight and commentary from Mindy.
I'm more aligned with Ted's P.O.V. regarding Shane when it comes to the television series. He may make his point with all the subtlety of the Roadrunner dropping a baby grand piano onto Wiley Coyote, but he's quicker to accept the reality of this new world better than anyone else in the group, including the television version of Rick.
Rick's kowtowing to Herschel to the point where he's helping to corral the walkers and lead them to barn was the last straw. I love the juxtaposition of God fearing Christian Herschel reading the bible moments before telling Rick he wants his family and the group off his property by the week's end, effectively signing a death warrant for at least some members of the group. At one point would Rick give up on negotiation and use his advantage in firearms and sheer numbers to stage a hostile takeover of the farm and would he be right in doing so?

This is the first comic I've read since I was a kid. I am instantly reminded of the joy I had reading my new titles every month.
And I have never had such a visceral reaction to a comic before like I had reading The Walking Dead. Count me among it's legion of fans.
The show is great, but it was definitely dragging for me until the reveal. I love the character develpoment, but I have to admit I would love to see it broaden it's scope, see what's going on somewhe else just for a little bit.
I also like how the show deviates from the comic series, but I have no doubt that Carl is gonna blow Shane away just like the book.
