Tough question my favorite Horror movie is "Halloween", so it's hard not to include it as my fav JC movie. Close by are "In the mouth of madness" & "The Thing"

Hmmm...I'll preface this by saying I really haven't enjoyed a JC movie since Prince of Darkness. Nevertheless, his early catalogue are some of my all-time favorite films.
If I had to choose my top 3 picks, they'd be (in order)
The Thing Escape from New York Big Trouble in Little China

The Thing, Halloween and Prince of Darkness, but I don't know in what order. I've never seen MoM, so I'm not sure if that would change things. I used to like the Fog a lot more, but on re-watching I was much less impressed, whereas the other three stand up to repeated viewings.

Funny I am the opposite about the fog. I had read James Herberts The Fog first so when I watched the movie I was really disappointed as I thought the book was so much better than the movie (both were unrelated stories). Saw it again 2 or 3 years ago and enjoyed it a lot more. I listened to the fog on Audio book recently and still love it.

I'm embarrassed to say this, but I totally forgot that Big Trouble in Little China is a Carpenter film. That is one of my favorite comedies from my childhood. I haven't watched it in ages, so I'll have to see it again soon. There's nothing embarrassing about that. Funny and original little movie. This is a hard pick. Up until a few years ago The Thing was always my favorite. Maybe it's that I've just seen it so many times that I think Halloween has slipped into my favorite of his. I think his episode of MOH called Cigarette Burns is amazing too. Unfortunately it's not a full movie. In The Mouth of Madness is so under appreciated and just amazing. Keeps getting better with age. The creepy scene with the person on the bike is still one of the scariest things I've seen.

It's so hard to single out a best movie with John Carpenter. I'd probably go with The Thing predictably if pushed. The Fog is my favourite Carpenter movie. I've never liked Halloween, and I've never really been able to put my finger on why that is. I suppose I've never found Michael Myers to be a very threatening character overall, and I think it's partly because we never actually know who he is - the back story in the remake was actually a good move I think, despite what happened in the second half. Michael Myers is neither one thing or the other - he's a human being but there's a supernatural element there too, so which is it? I don't know if that ambiguity was always planned... I know in theory that the 'not knowing' should be unsettling, he's a shape, right? It doesn't work for me though. I always felt the same way about Jason Vorhees for the same reason...sacrilege I know...
Love Assault on Precinct 13, Escape From New York and Big Trouble in equal measure. Saw Prince of Darkness when it came out on VHS way back when, but I think I was too young to appreciate it - I must rewatch that soon.

I regard 'The Thing' not only as Carpenters best, but one of the best films ever. 'Prince of Darkness' is another fave.
I'd love to see 'Mouth of Madness', but I don't think it's (or has ever been?) available here in the UK.

Love Assault on Precinct 13, Escape From New York... I like to think of Assault on Precinct 13 as a sort-of prequel to Escape from New York. The "out of control" gangs in AoP13 seem to be a natural starting point for the explosion in the crime rate alluded to in the prelude to EFNY. "Napoleon Wilson" even feels like a trial run for the Snake Plissken character - Tim

I do the same with the crazies. I see it as a prequel to night of the living dead.

Man, that is a tough question to answer.
I probably quote They Live the most. The Thing might have the highest tension scene in all of cinema. Halloween beckoned in a new era of horror.
But, I think I'll go with Big Trouble in Little China.
If only for the line "I'd go with you, but" "Yeah, I know, there's something wrong with your face".
