Let it be known I Hate subtitles. I watch movies to be entertained while not having to read too. A friend recommended Dead Snow [(Død snø) proper title I researched after not finishing the movie] and recently watched Pans Labryinth [(El laberinto del fauno) " "]. Yeah, yeah I know everyone liked this one. I did not know it was Subtitled . Had to vent - tell me what you think...

I'll take subtitles over dubbing every day and twice on Sundays.

Don't mind them myself.
But I do always get annoyed by suggestions that there is somehow a lack of intelligence involved in not liking subtitled films, argument usually gets trotted out when a foreign film is remade, "do they really think we're all to thick over here to read subtitles?" - never seems that unreasonable to me that there are people who don't want to. Afterall unless a film was deliberately made to have subtitles I've always felt directors must be annoyed by them, I'm sure they didn't frame their movie with people constantly looking at the bottom in mind.

I prefer subtitles to dubbing.

Subs every time. I don't even class it as reading when I'm watching anymore as I've seen so many films not in the English language. My mind switches off and I go with the flow. As a fan of cheesy kung fu and Italian horror films I'm used to awful dubs, but if I'm watching a serious film that wasn't made in English I'd rather have the original languge where the actors control the emotion rather than getting a voice actor's interpretation.

I fall into the category of "Couldn't care less". The only time dubbing bothers me is when I feel that I cannot picture the Americanized voice coming out of a Foreign actors mouth. For example, I probably would've preferred "Let the right one in" with subs because the voices of the characters flat out annoyed me. Other than that, I don't really care how a dub syncs up with lip movement.

I would rather see subtitled versions of movies but i enjoy a bad bit of dubbing with the more schlock Italian Horrors The dubbed version of LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE/LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE is a hoot.

Bad subtitles can be a hoot as well. Nothing is coming to mind, but some low budget Hong Kong action flicks can have misspellings that are hilarious.

I prefer the subtitles, so I can hear the actors perform as intended. I can read quickly enough and am used to seeing subtitles, so that I really only need to glance at the bottom of the screen to catch what is said.
I also tend to feel that dubbing alters the film's sound mix in a negative way.

I agree. However, remember even if you watch a subtitled Italian language version of an Italian horror film, it's still dubbed. They shot without sound.

subtitles are fine - but you need to be the right mood to read a film, you can't just sit down and have a 'ready' sprung on you...

Depends on the tone of the film, I think. Dubbing is way too intrusive in a ponderous or arthouse film, or even a comedy--timing is almost impossible to recover with a disembodied ADR voice. But for foreign films where the dialogue is of little to no importance--exploitation, kung fu, giallo, etc--or in animation, where I'd rather focus on the visuals and the lack of lip sync isn't all that noticeable anyway, give me bad dubbing all the way. The lower grade the cinema, the more the dubbing can enhance the whole garbage aesthetic.
