Breaking Bad - 'to challenge conventions, to defy authority and to skirt the edges of the law' As we ride out the wait for the fifth and final season to come, we take a look at the series to date of the AMC show dealing with an evolution of a high school chemistry teacher’s transformation into Scarface. The one sentence synopsis of the show 'chemistry teacher diagnosed with lung cancer turns to cooking meth' is a huge over-simplification of a story that delivers incredible depth and complexity. It is one of the rare instances where all the elements come together: amazing performances across the whole cast (specifically Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul), smart, and tight scriptwriting, cinematic and technically impressive filmmaking, locations, music, etc. Needless to say, it is a recommendation. The layout is comprised of an initial spoiler free setup of the concept of the series, the players and what makes the show work in our opinion, followed by an overview of the story threads that stood out over four seasons which are spoiler heavy (clear notice given). We hope those who have checked out the show enjoy our broad re-visit of the story so far and newcomers will take something from our reasoning for recommending it. If you are looking for intelligent storytelling with compelling delivery, Breaking Bad is a gem (and no, we do not have an endorsement deal with AMC). As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324

Curse you! This is my busy time of year, and I've fallen way behind in podcast listening. Now I'm going to have to find time to listen to this one. I caught the show back in early December, and fell in love.

I've got the opposite problem. I'm caught up on all my podcasts and have yet to find the time to watch Breaking Bad. Now I've got to find the time to squeeze in the show so I can stay current with the podcast.

Re: IFT. I don't know why everyone hates Skyler for that. I cheered her when she did that.
Let's not forget:
a) Walt had already raped her (and if you say she was only "sorta raped" I will reach through the wires and strangle you)
b) Walt had attempted to checkmate her; placing her in a position where she had to choose between her morals and her family. So she turned the tables and checkmated him right back the only way she could. And yes, she could have just up and left him, stranding herself in in the cesspool of Albuquerque NM with a baby and disabled son, but then Walt could have done the same; struggled on, faced life's adversities and shouldered what he'd been given instead of choosing the path of evil (and make no mistake, what Walt is doing is FAR more evil than anything she did). But he didn't, because he wanted to take revenge against the world for wounding his ego.

(and make no mistake, what Walt is doing is FAR more evil than anything she did). Totally agree (as my ranting may have suggested). I was just so far past caring about the comings and goings of Skyler at that point, it came off as an irritating distraction...to me.

Ted, you may as well just watch the awesomeness that is Mad Men, and then you've got the AMC shows covered.

It's good... when they actually talk about the show. Which often represents about 20% of the running time.

He didn't even get to finish. Besides, these women who go round being heavily pregnant and wearing green face masks are just asking for it.

I'm drawing a blank. I mainlined the entire series in about a week, and the rape is escaping me. Do you recall which episode it was in?

Season 1 after Walt starts into the severe character shifting, he aggressively propositions Skylar when she's not at her best and just not in the mood - resulting in her green face-mask gunk smearing on the fridge (and Walt jr. curiously seeing his mom's coitus smudge later). A very difficult moment - really like the fact the show's writers paint a main character who is so despicable for us to follow.

Just got caught up in time for the new season. Awesome show. Can't wait to see where this goes.
