In the grand tradition of the slasher film we present... a sequel. Now that we have the history and characteristics of the slasher subgenre covered, it's time to pick some movies to discuss. Although these films have been steadily slicing their way to movie screens for decades we chose to pay tribute to the key period of the early 80's with our selections (which nicely leaves room for a part 3). The picks were pretty random and are by no means meant to represent anything more than a demonstration of the variety (and arguably lack of variety) of what was offered in the day. Titles include: The Prowler, Maniac Cop, Silent Rage, The Burning, Slumber Party Massacre (and part 2), The Mutilator, April Fools Day, House on Sorority Row, Sleepaway Camp and a couple modern picks Wrong Turn and Reeker. We have relocated to a local pub patio for this week's show so please bear with the change in audio (hopefully the unexpected bird dive bomb makes up for it). Classic slasher flicks and pints - a winning combination. As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324

Great episode guys! I was happy to hear Doug give some love to Wrong Turn...it's a personal favorite of mine. And Ted...I'm glad the bird was annoying you as much as it was annoying me.

I was hoping when you started talking Sleepaway camp you would have mentioned the Aunts performance at the start.. It amuses me greatly everytime I watch it.

Great Slasher Episodes guys.
Thanks for the review of Silent Rage. I must have seen it a dozen times during my teenage years on cable TV. The first viewing was with some buds trying to stay awake til 3:00 am when it aired. No probs not getting tired though, we were all in. Consensus was...Chuck Norris and Horror??? Fuucck Yeah we're watching.
Haven't seen it for probably at least 25 years. Glad to hear that it still holds up for a good time.

The aunt's great and theres also the guido counselor with the belly shirt. probably one of the wrost acting jobs of all time. Also, the part that makes me laugh so hard is when all the kids are piling out of the buses, the cook and some of the counselor's are watching them. the cook says "where I come from.... we call em' baldies". no one reports it, no one bats an eye, no one even gives him a look. they laugh and shake their head. "you so crazy pedophilic camp cook. good hunting ruining some poor kids life and or summer by brutally raping them in the storage room of the kitchen."
the talk of the 80's slashers reminded me of one of my favorites that i haven't thought about in years. the canadians probably never saw this, but on the USA channel one of the main components of my childhood was staying up late in the summer and watching "USA'S UP All Night." Hosted by either Gilbert Godfrey or some blond chick who i can't remember her name. Anyways, the two movies I never missed when they showed it was My Bloody Valentine, which has already been discussed, and a movie called Killer Party. From what I remember, it was a slasher mixed with exorcist and night of the demons. I haven't seen it since I was 10 so it's probably REALLY bad but I had fond memories of it.

With 80s slasher movies, nostalgia plays a major role. A lot of them really weren’t very good.
I think the multiple twists in the final five minutes of Happy Birthday To Me are so convoluted that Doug didn’t really spoil much. The movie is overlong but it’s worth watching for the kills and that ridiculous climax. Not sure I buy the idea that Slumber Party Massacre is a parody. I just found it godawful but mercifully short. I can’t believe they made two sequels. The Burning is incredibly tame for a video nasty; the actual burning at the beginning is the most disturbing part.
Not seen Maniac Cop for many many years but another Lustig movie, Maniac from 1980, is a good example of a slasher movie done well. Reeker is a high recommend too. I saw the sequel/prequel recently. It shows us how the killer started out but doesn’t really explain his present condition. The payoff doesn’t work so well when you know what’s going on, but it has some good gory moments and there’s some grim humour thrown in.

Hello to my brothers of horroretc tony, ted, and sometimes doug. I definitely wanted to add my humble two cents on part 2 of the slasher podcast. I had purchased the 3 disc slumber party massacre set released as a part of the shout factory roger corman collection. While I have always enjoyed the first slumber party massacre for what it was - a horror film with obvious comedic undertones. I decided to go against my better judgment and against the advice of ted and doug and watched Slumber Party Massacre 2.
What the hell was all I could repeat as the credits started. I mean this isn't a Promtheus style film but I still left with more questions than answers. None of it made any sense! Why did the driller killer feel the need to take a rockabilly dance break every five minutes? Why was it so easy for the survivor girl to just set fire to him real quick to end the killer? My answer was that they were probably running dangerously close to going over the run time for the movie and needed it over quickly.
I can now say I watched a movie worse than Troll 2. Next time I promise to always listen to you fellas when you say a movie is utter garbage and not in a good way!

Can't believe I'm the only one on here who was slightly unsettled by Ted, Tony and Doug's apparent complete lack of empathy for the random bird that flew into a wall while they were recording. Not a huge fan of birds myself, but still... have a bit of compassion, man!
