Great review, and a really thoughtful take on the remake-of-a-remake angle (and makes the point that "classics" are rarely instant classics). I've not seen the 2011 Thing, but after reading that, I will do.

Great review - I would quite like a 'Thing loose in wider civilization' film. It could have echoes of the Seventies version of 'Body Snatchers', ramping up the paranoia to epic proportions.
As it is, I don't feel that The 2011 film is sucessful in what it sets out to do, it seems a little half-hearted when compared with Carpenters, both in terms of characterisation and 'thrills'.

That had occurred to me too. When you think about it, once in isn't in a place where it can be isolated and exterminated, why hide? IF you managed to find a good reason to force it to stay hidden, yeah, you're right, it would turn The Thing into Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
