In June of 2012 two horror geeks disappeared in the woods near Kingston, Ontario, while recording a podcast... A year later their footage was found. okay, so maybe that's not true but we did get lost. This week we put together a true From the Hip edition of the show that started out as an on location recording on the waterfront and became a travelogue of the day's activities. With Tony back, we do some catching up covering a variety of subjects including recent watches of Phantom of the Paradise, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, Piranha 3DD, and... Prometheus. Things got a little spicy with that one. A variety of housekeeping topics are sprinkled in including the ongoing callout for Book Club submissions and a thank you for the response to graphic novel recommendations (we've got some thoughts on Batman: Knightfall and Kingdom Come). Tony's travel highlights, thoughts on the Amazon Kindle, Ted's moving violation story, a slasher inspired schlock corner, and a whole lot more keep the conversation going. We hope you enjoy this old school edition of the From the Hip format and consider watching some Hellraiser movies (just a suggestion). As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324

Is it odd that while I was on here listening to the episode, I waved to the screen when you mentioned the forums I may have to put the drink down

Alot of people liked the movie Prometheus but I think just as many have disliked or hated it. I think it's pretty even. I don't know if anyone can have the unpopular opinion on this film because it's very divided.

But if the people in one's circle generally favour a film then to voice dissatisfaction with it would be unpopular - guess it's all a matter of context.

Movie club is a splendid idea. It should help make the post-episode forum chat much more lively and better informed. Interesting that Tony is tackling Hellraiser. Having recently ploughed manfully through the entire franchise myself, I look forward to hearing his views.

Why does everyone want to drop a nuclear bomb on Kansas? Guess it's time to move.

Ted I agree but you did not put it into that context in the episode but if thats what you meant than yes I totally agree. I have taking some crap on the facebook forum for stating some complaints on the Prometheus parts of this weeks episode, hope I did not offend because I am pretty sure you are fine with debate.

Ah, that's why I avoid facebook You are absolutely right about that. Even though I don't know why my occasional tangents or diatribes strike you as contrived or sad, you are fully entitled to your opinion. I can assure you however, I rant quite often in and out of podcast recordings and it is not contrived (oh the ticket complaining that went on when the mic was off...) I am aware that I get overly worked up over trivial things but chalk it up to the fun of doing what we're doing. I apologize to Anthony after the recording and we move on with life. No, my perspective on Prometheus is certainly not unique or special because I was (selling myself as) one of a handful of Lost watchers who got burned - I was just trying to explain it for those who never watched Lost (and yes, there were many that never tried it or quit part through). The same signposts (or carrots on sticks) are in Prometheus that were strewn through Lost and I/we know how that turned out.

After hearing your thoughts on Prometheus and Lost Ted, You and Tony must be "delighted" with the news announced last night that Carlton Cuse is returning to tv with his new series "Bates Motel" on the A&E nework. The series will deal with Norman Bates before the events in Psycho (oh gawd I wish I was joking) ..to make it worse it look like the show was commissoned without even a pilot.....I expect Norman to be possessed by a smoke monster and a constant promise there will be answers.

I never watched Lost, but Carlton Cuse was also co-creator of a show in the '90s called The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., starring none other than Bruce Campbell as a good-hearted bounty hunter searching for his father's killer in a purposefully anachronistic version of the Old West. It was a good show, and a great vehicle for Bruce, but did suffer from a streak of questionable mythology, which manifested in a device called The Orb. Throughout the show's 20-something episodes, the Orb was responsible for super strength, time travel, rapid aging, and resurrection of the dead, depending simply on what the plot called for, but its origins were never revealed; it was, simply, a device.
In the commentary for the pilot episode, Campbell asks Cuse to define exactly what the Orb is, and Cuse stumbles and blusters his way through some vague answer which makes rather explicit his complete and utter lack of knowledge as to the device that he himself was responsible for creating. Given the complaints surrounding Lost, it seems that Cuse apparently has a penchant for just throwing random shit at the audience with no intention of ever explaining it or having it pay off.

I am afraid I was pretty much a hypocrite attacking you kinda the way you attacked Damon Lindlof but I assure you I agree with some of your statements and I find Promethes to be a very flawed film. The people coming to your recue annoyed me because they kinda acted like you should never be called out and seem to call into question how much I love Horror Etc. Horror Etc is by far my faverite movie podcast and as I have said many time I trust your judgment when it's positive. The whole thing is done now anyway and I am glad but I glad to know you are ok with people sharing opinions and none of what I said was meant as an attack on you, we all rant sometime, you just have a fanbase to gripe about it if we disagree. By the way I hope you see The Amazing Spider-Man and talk about it soon.

Hey I am a few episodes behind, and I just watched Prometheus yesterday and I had a few thoughts.
David's motivations were clear, although it was fairly subtle. The crew of the ship was constantly condescending to David and he absolutely hated them for it.
During the scene when the old man is talking about him never having a soul, or something like this, there is an held shot of him expressionless, while he is clearly seething. When he talks to Noomi's husband at the pool table he again looks extremely insulted by him, although he says nothing about it.
The complexity of David was what I really loved about the film besides the great action, and the fucking awesome alien c-section. He was very emotional, mischievous, and spiteful, despite what the crew thought of him.
On top of that there is a lot of subtext to the movie, which will be fun to untangle sometime, but I think I'd have to watch it again to comment much on.
It wasn't perfect by any stretch, and it's completely fair that you didn't enjoy it Ted but I think if you are that upset that the medical-pod was in a different room than you would expect, than you are getting into nitpicking territory.
I have a feeling when it gets to dvd/blu-ray we might see a director's cut with an additional 15-20 minutes.
