"We have such sights to show you..." We kick off our Hellraiser franchise retrospective with a feature length audio commentary to the seminal 1987 Clive Barker classic film! Original, unsettling, and defying all categorization Hellraiser introduced many horror fans to the distorted imagination of Barker's self described 'celebration of perversity'. The film led to a string of sequels that formed a rather disjointed franchise but this week we focus solely on the original, discussing the effect and impact of the film, comparison to the short story upon which it was based Hellbound Heart, and generally enjoy a rewatch of one of our favorite horror movies. If you are new to Hellraiser, we highly recommend tracking down a copy for a genuine outside the box horror experience lacking any semblance of 80's kitsch, for those well familiar, please join us for a revisit of such iconic moments as the practical effect driven resurrection of Frank Cotton, the discovery of the sights and sounds unlocked by a mysterious puzzle box, and of course the unforgettable cenobites and the birth of a horror icon (aka Pinhead). More Hellraiser episodes will follow in the coming weeks but for now let's allow Clive Barker to tear our souls apart with a truly original work. As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324

Enjoyed the Podcast. What do you think of a Rob Zombie remake of this? As said in the podcast, Barker has a dirty sleazy feel to his books...which is right down RZ's alley.

Loved it, guys! After the other main three, I'm glad you finally got to my favorite "modern monster." Although the prospect of re-watching all of the films in advance of your next podcasts is probably going to be more painful than pleasurable. Nonetheless, I have them all, so re-watch them, I shall!
For the record, Tony, Barker uses the "mixes sperm with" concept a few times in his books. In one, a particularly distasteful fellow jacks off and mixes the sperm with feces to create snakes. That MAY have been the point where I put the book down . . . eeesh!

Good stuff I love the commentaries and I have been looking forward to some Hellraiser talk around here for a long time. It's also a wicked coincidence that I received the Hellraiser Blu Ray in the mail Tuesday that I bought last week. Just one gripe though, I wish Tony didnt start talking DarK Knight Rises spoilers in the middle. I have done my best to steer clear and I panicked trying to skip ahead and stay in synch with the blu ray. I ended up just dropping the volume down but it was a scramble.

I really enjoy all the Horror etc commentaries, and this one was great too.
Something occurred to me as Ted and Tony were discussing the mysterious (& possibly nonsensical) hobo-figure that didn't occur to me when I first watched the film.
He eats locusts, right?
What other famous ragged figure eats locusts (and honey)? John the Baptist, that's who.
John the Baptist came to announce the coming of Christ - so if this is an anti-John the Baptist, does he come to announce the coming of the Antichrist?
Just a thought...

As much as people like to bitch about the fx...tonally, and visually, The Midnight Meat Train has come far closer, after the first two Hellraiser films, than Barker did with Nightbreed, and Lord of Illusions. It's almost as if he found out about comic books, fifteen years too late, and took them too close to heart.

Wow, was talking to my son, about some online game (Cool Math) and made myself an idiot. Barker's last two films were basically comic books. Why? Oh. Why? I've read everything up to Imajica at least three times, and I've never gotten that impression. So what if it was groovy that he was in that Mick Garris/Stephen King thing with the Borg Bitch picking his nose? Oh, wait, that wasn't. I'm vaguely worried about him, because he smokes cigars like your average dude smokes cigs, and he croaks like a Liverpudlian toad.

Excellent podcast! I look forward to the following episodes covering the rest of the Hellraiser series! Just a thought on the bone dragon......could it be the alternate form of the merchant? The merchant always seems to have a puzzle box to offer......what do you think?

I definitely enjoyed this commentary/show. Hellraiser is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I too have been hearing rumors of a remake and I seriously doubt anyone would really do it justice. Personally I think the way to do it would be to concentrate on the theme of pleasure and pain being interchangeable and on the psychology of the Julia and Frank characters, with the cenobites moving more into the background. But likely a remake would more resemble Hellbound than the original movie.

I just couldn't get over the whole midatlantic thing with Hellraiser; it was obviously supposed to be set in the UK, but kept having to pretend to be in the US.
