You'd never guess from my avatar, but I'm a bit of a Thing fan. I've discovered some links to a few "Thing"-related short films you all might enjoy: First up, a stellar (and cerebral) analysis of whether or not Childs was assimilated. Part 1 and Part 2. Next, here's an amusing riff on the blood test scene. BTW, this site hosts several different Carpenter-inspired short films, ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime (the Halloween parody is fricking priceless...). Lastly, this is a very good looking short film called "The Things". It's obvious a LOT of time and effort went into this, and the director has a great eye for lighting and atmosphere. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on this one though...I've got some opinions of my own. The last 2 links came from [www.outpost31.com[/url], a great site for all (ahem) things Thing-related. Enjoy! - Tim

Thank you for posting. I love any detailed discussion of The Thing. The Things director commentary is one of the best and I'll devour these with the same interest.

Watched the Was Childs Assimilated video and really loved it. I'm considering ordering his full DVD of commentary.
He has me pretty convinced that Childs was assimilated which was something I doubted.
Going to watch The Things next.

I'm now in the 'Childs is the Thing' camp too. Some fascinating analysis there.

I've watched The Thing many times and I never noticed the clothes as he did. Very sharp.
Here's my question about The Thing. Does an assimilated person know another assimilated person? Would the Thing stand by or help destroy an assimilated person just to maintain his cover?

Does an assimilated person know another assimilated person? Would the Thing stand by or help destroy an assimilated person just to maintain his cover? That's a good question...I've always assumed one thing must be able to recognize another in some manner, otherwise chaos could ensure when one tried to assimilate the other and it would fight back. On the other tentacle, I could easily see a thing or things standing back and allowing one of it's party to be attacked if it thought "hiding" in such a manner would be the smartest tactical move in the situation. For example, I've always assumed that's why Palmer-thing drew everyone's attention to Norris's head as it scuttled away... - Tim

Ahhh, good point. Your karma has improved.
I need to go back and watch that scene again. I'm not sure if I knew Palmer was assimilated at that point.
Didn't the video make a point that the Thing wanted to kill or assimilate everyone and wait for a rescue team? If it did then why build a spaceship. I may be confusing those events.

I need to go back and watch that scene again. I'm not sure if I knew Palmer was assimilated at that point. I'd like to think either Carpenter or David Clennon assumed Palmer had been assimilated by then...after all, he things-out a few minutes later in story-time Didn't the video make a point that the Thing wanted to kill or assimilate everyone and wait for a rescue team? If it did then why build a spaceship. I may be confusing those events. I can't recall specifically, but I think his point was that by the time Mac had blown the camp, it's best bet was to "go back to sleep". I think the mini-saucer was probably "Plan A", and perhaps Childs (if he really was assimilated...and I'm starting to think that he was), was "Plan B". - Tim
