Hi! I've been a listener for many months now, working my way through current and back-catalog. Ted, Tony, and Sometimes-Doug feel like old friends, and I love hearing audio feedback from the community.
Might as well insert a value-added question. Rosemary's Baby is coming out on Blu-Ray by Criterion and I'm really torn. The $30 - $40 price tag really bugs me - I feel that Criterion has positioned itself as a hoity-toity art house purveryor of Film (with a capital F). And they price themselves, accordingly.
My dilemma - the SD disc by Paramount is sub-par - image is soft and upscales poorly on modern screens. (If it looked half as good as Paramount's disc of The Tenant (also by Polanski), I might just live with it.) So, the title really begs for the HD treatment. But the pricing offends my sensibilities and wallet. Are you like me? Should I just content myself with my SD disc and wait for an unlikely deal? Or take the plunge?

Welcome! I wish I could give you an answer, but I need to watch Rosemary's Baby first. Though Repulsion is an incredible film.

I would just wait and you can probably buy it used for $20 sometime in the near future.
I think Criterion makes their releases the best they can and give audio commentary tracks when they can so they feel they can charge a lot.
I think it's a tad much personally, but you can always rent through netflix.

Welcome aboard!
As for your question, Barnes and Noble use to run Criterion DVDs at half off. Might be able to find such a deal online.
As for the price, I'm sure part of it had to do with licensing the film from another studio. Criterion doesn't own any of the films the company releases, but must pay another studio for the rights to distribute it. I'm sure that is part of the cost, and the reasons Criterion DVDs often go out of print, as the licensing agreement expires at some point.
Be sure to check out the How about a Movie Night thread in general discussions. Follow the instructions and join us at Synchtube every Sunday for a couple of films and some fun times.
