Okay, Universal would have many of us double, triple, or even quadruple dip for Universal Monsters...this time on Blu-Ray. Are we satisfied with our standard def DVDs? Who will take the plunge? The value proposition: Some nice restoration work, as this video shows (Dracula restoration)... www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6z9BsHgKz4Wisely, they've put out the "big eight": Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Invisible Man, Creature for the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Mummy, Bride of Frankenstein in the forthcoming "Essential Collection". This should satisfy most collectors, who don't require the HD version of the sequels, as many of us already have them via the "Legacy" sets. But, again, I'm curious to know how many of us are burning for the HD upgrade. Will you contentedly sit tight? Or take the plunge yet again?

I will probably take the plunge. I'm a sucker for these things, though. I don't want to replace my library with Blu-Ray, but find myself doing so anyway.

I'm happy with the DVD releases, but if the price is right....
Of course, I have to buy a Blu-Ray player first. ;D

Bought it last week and I just finished The Mummy. I have all the 'Legacy' editions that were release a few years back, but I couldn't pass up the superior sound and picture quality which truly are mind blowing considering the age of this stuff. Definitely worth the upgrade. (nice username, OP)

Oddly, I didn't see any Universal horror films available when I made a recent trip to Best Buy. I'd really like to own a copy of Son of Frankenstein (which is probably my fave Universal horror flick), but looks like I'll need to order it on Amazon. I'll go with DVD...Don't own a blue ray machine, nor do I have much interest in one these days.

I'm hearing godd things about this set so I'll probably get it at some point. I'll wait and see if the price comes down in the new year, although I understand that it's cheaper here in the UK than in the States.

I bought this off Amazon for their discounted price. I love it. Transfers look awesome. Loaded with special features. I haven't even gotten through them all yet. I just finished the Mummy.
I also recommend the Halloween 2 and 3 which Shout Factory recently released.

Got this set for Christmas and Drácula (ie, the Spanish version) was the first one I’ve watched so far - as it's the only one I've never seen before. The restoration has worked amazingly well for most of the running time, although there are a few scenes that are in quite poor condition. Apparently they didn’t have good copies of every reel to work with.
In some ways this is superior to the Lugosi version; it’s longer and provides a fuller storyline and some imaginative camera-work makes the stilted, stage-bound Lugosi version look even clunkier. However, Lugosi presents a far more compelling Dracula than Carlos Villarias, whose furious mugging borders on the comical. Which is a pity, because the performances of most of the other actors in the Spanish version are top-notch.
