This is getting on my nerves more and more and its not only the walking dead...In a world where contaminated blood is a very VERY huge concern, not to mention everything wants to bite HARD,would you run around in a tank top?We all know in the pre-zombie world you cant get blood on ANYTHING.Everyone wears gloves in sports ,medicine, etc. I just dont buy that wouldnt be one of the rudimentary rules of survival.Leather jacket anyone?I know the riot gear comes into it in the book but im talking basic daily protection. The only one ive ever seen address it is Jonathan Maberry.Coats made from carpet. Now thats thinking.I dont even remember Brooks addressing it but its been a while. Theres a nitpick for ya Ted.

You mean like a bear suit but for zombies? I don't know. I think this is a mobility issue more than anything. It wouldn't just be a leather jacket, you'd need some good thick gloves, heavy boots, to avoid those ankle biters, and a helmet to cover your face. That's a lot of gear. I think I'd rather be able to out run them in my tank top.

It also depends on the virus. For example, the HIV virus is rather fragile, so I to speak, and can not live outside the human body for lo, while the Hepititus virus can last for weeks outside the body. This can make infection more difficult, as fragile viruses need to find a way into the body and the human body is well designed to keep foriegn material out.
Other factors get involved, such as the ultimate target of the virus/bacteria responsible for the onset of the disease that causes one to become a zombie. As bites are the normal route of infection, one must assume the organism must enter the bloodstream, so a lot will depend one how effective the organism is at breaking through our body's defenses.
So, why get so bogged down dealing with the science of the virus when you have a story to tell? Besides, having the heroes in full riot gear would eliminate any suspense over someone being bitten.

no not riot gear at all, but i just dont buy that you wouldnt have at least gloves and long sleeves. even work gloves. it seems to me it would be part of your "new life". I mean in construction we wear that stuff always. Sratches ,bites? i dunno it seems like its not addressed is all. And certainly not a bear suit. Ahhh what do i know?

I've had the same thoughts. I think you'd want some protective gear.
Still one of my favorite shows though. We just finished watching season 2 and I was telling my friend this was better than almost any zombie movie we'd seen in the last ten years. Can't wait to start on season 3.

I was joking about the bear suit =). I do believe that if you are knowingly going into a roomful of zombies you should gear up, but most of the time you just can't be ready for zombies. I don't think writers are really thinking about this, it's not very interesting if everyone is making rational decisions.

You're probably right about the long sleeve shirts, or some type of covering, but work gloves could be tiring to wear when you're constantly hacking at anything (blackberry vines, the undead, whatever) unless the implement you're using is designed for use with gloves. And there is weather factors (down South during the summer might make dehydration a problem with bulkier clothing) and one has to take into account restriction of movement vs. protection. It would be interesting to address these problems, but I think that might be beyond the scope of a movie or television show. After all, I could see this being an long episode of WD, where everyone starts talking about the pros and cons of heavy, protective clothing, and we suddenly get another six episode farm arc. On the other hand, we should be grateful the producers of the show were wise enough to not dress Maggie, Andrea or Michonne like this: For those who don't know, this is a movie based on a video game, in which the gal clad in leather gets bitten by a zombie and dies, yet the girl in the bikini is never scratched. Yea, that's gonna happen.

BTW im tlking about Zom fiction in general not just Walking Dead( i realize my header suggests this) Anyway i admit i never really thought of it myself until i read in one of Jonathan Mayberrys books about a protective coat made of carpet of all things(bite that). It was meant for confrontations outside the safe zone. Anyone who hasnt read him should, hes great. My new favorite even.

Bear suits? Protective clothing? Survival? BAHHHHH!! None of these things matter!! How is Laurie feeling? Has Rick done something to piss her off ? Like doing exactly what she told him to do? This, gentle readers, is what matters!!

I love the grim asylum atmosphere and like last year, the story is just insane, the horror on steroids. The writers seem to have an obsession with mad doctors.
