I usually enjoy the Oscars, meaningless though the horserace may be, but this was one of the worst in my memory. Not that I disagreed with the choices, but that, even though I'd not seen most of the nominations, the winners were frightfully easy to pick.
Martin and Baldwin were passable as hosts, though I'm already hard pressed to remember one bit from them.
Just one notable montage that I recall, a reaction I am sure to last year's montage overkill, and that, of course, was Horror Movies. Alas, Horror finally goes to the Oscars, and its in one of its worst shows.
Probably the worst bit for me was the way Best Director and Best Picture were handled.
In case you missed, Babs Streisand walks out to present best director, and before reading the names, points out that this could be the night we get the first woman director. Or the first black director. As it turns out, Bigelow won, but how shitty would that have been if it HAD been one of the white guys? Recognize the history if it happens, but don't set up the other nominees to be disappointing choices if they win. Really shitty thing to do.
Then they just open the envelope for Best Pic and read the name. No build up. No listing of the films (all 10!) just to remind you. This after every best actor and actress nominee had a 2 minute speech devoted to them leading up to the presentation. This is the best show business has to offer?

I agree with you Mr D. The only thing positive that really stood out to me was that the first horror flick they showed in the montage was Jaws (which hearkens back to the argument we had on the old forum of is Jaws a horror flick or an adventure flick).
It was nice to see James Taylor do the Beetles song for the "In Memoriam" segment. Unfortunately, they fucked up and didn't include both Farrah Fawcett and Bea Arthur in the montage. Both are primarily TV stars, but both have had more movie experience than Micheal Jackson who was included. What the fuck, Oscars?

I had no idea Bea Arthur was dead.

I had no idea Bea Arthur was dead. Apparently, neither did the Academy.

I haven't watched the Oscars since 2004. It was nice to see a fantasy film (Return of the King) get some recognition, but the atmosphere of the whole thing was just sickening. In the opening montage Michael Moore was crushed by an Olyphant (or whatever those big elephants are called) while reprimanding the Hobbits for their "fictitious war"--obviously an incredibly immature response to his Oscar acceptance speech the previous year--and it was met with thunderous applause. Hollywood loves to pretend it's liberal unless there are morons to be pandered to; then they sell out on those values right quick.
Later that night Bill Murray almost walked out when he didn't win Best Actor for Lost in Translation and had to be coaxed back in by Billy Crystal, and later, of course, complained about the pathetic atmosphere of desperation and self-entitlement of everybody else there. Yeah, when you raise a big stink about not winning, you're not in a position to criticize anyone else for being pathetic.
And the hosts have always been god-awful. Anybody remember Whoopi Goldberg descending on a swing a la Moulin Rouge? That was embarrassing to watch. "Boy, I haven't seen this much [something] since [particular celebrity]'s [reference to something for which celebrity is notorious]." *canned laughter* Their only function is to try and convince us humble folks watching at home that Hollywood sure does have a sense of humor about itself. Never mind the narcissistic bullshit we have to hear about on a regular basis; someone made a crack about Nicole Kidman's Botox injections, so hey, those movie stars aren't so lofty and superior after all, yuck yuck.
Bleh. It's all crap. Crap, I tell you!

Yes, it was. It wasn't bad. It was introduced by some Twilight kids (I think) and featured a number of horror musical pieces (and the violin piece from Young Frankenstein). I'm sure you can find it online if you search.

From Clive Barkers twitter:
It may be a small gesture by the Academy that Horror Movies exist, but to see iconic monsters on screen , including Pinhead, made me smile.

Because of our timing in recording we mentioned it was going to be there but had not yet seen it. Real shame about Corman getting shuffled off to a secondary locale for his award Probably the most boring Oscar show I've seen in many years.

The Oscar's were such an incredible waste of time this year (not saying that they are typically amazing, but still). I noticed that the Horror montage used maybe 5 clips from the original Nightmare on Elm Street, and overall many movies were given more time to shine than others. Also, it seems that on the whole, many new horror movies were flat out ignored.

The horror montage did nothing for me. Just the same old clips you always see. I doubt it made any non-fans at home say, "Wow! I really need to see more horror movies!".

For this year's Oscars, I watched Tentacles on either Hulu or Crackle with the Oscars on my TV. When something interesting was about to happen, I paused the movie.

I couldn't believe The Exorcist only got one small clip in the whole montage when other movies got multiple clips.

Don't know how long this will be up. The Academy seems to be taking them down, quickly.
