The Alfred Hitchcock spotlight marches on this week with another five selections to ruminate about. The films of Alfred Hitchcock, as even the most casual fan knows, manage to blend elements of comedy, romance, tragedy, and politics, all with a captivating thriller plot. Our picks to share this episode exemplify that range which include a a straight up screwball comedy, a very bleak essay on obsession, a proto-James Bond spy thriller, the iconic killer birds film that ushered in a new horror sub-genre, and a darkly humourous giallo-esque serial killer movie. We do hope you are enjoying the ride with us as we explore the works of a truly visionary, if not sometimes controversial figure in cinema. We have left plenty of room for a further instalment with many more important works and a beloved anthology series that brought his dark wit and techniques for lingering suspense to living rooms). The Trouble With Harry 5:27 - 25:35 (interlude - Shirley MacLain's recap) Vertigo 25:35 - 52:47 (interlude - William Friedkin and Martin Scorsese reflections) North By Northwest 52:47 - 1:12:01 (interlude - the great Bernard Herrmann) The Birds 1:12:01 - 1:38:18 (interlude - a welcome from Alfred Hitchcock) Frenzy 1:38:18 - 2:12:17 (interlude - on the set with Hitch) As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324

Well I can say I'm enjoying the hell out of this; I don't care how long it takes, the longer the better- you could devote an entire podcast to hitch. As to it being your first time, well so what? That just makes it better to hear. Everyone should see Hitch once, and now you have, so great.
Carey Grant and George Clooney have a lot in common, but really I think they were quite distinct in a number of ways. George's persona is the gallant nice guy, while Carey always had a core of pure ice, which made him an ideal Hitch hero.
Interesting fact: Carey Grant's real name was Archie Leach, which was the name of John Cleese's character in "A Fish Called Wanda"
Another interesting fact: Melanie Griffith is Tippi Hedren's daughter, and was named after Melanie Daniels.
Wow. I had no idea Veronica Cartwright was the little girl in The Birds. She's basically spent her entire career screaming. Her character in Alien was named Lambert, and basically served as the screamer. This went all the way through to The Witches of Eastwick

The only Hitchcock film I have seen in it's entirety is The Birds and I don't really remember the first part ,but don't doubt Doug. I too am enjoying the hell out of this little series.
I'm particuarly interested in checking out Frenzy.

Another great show guys, love frenzy Hitchcock returning home to east London after years of american films, and you really sense the enjoyment he's getting in this film- a definite late return to form.
I never picked up on the ex military aspect of frenzy much, but for your interest Britain was bombing Egypt as part of the suez crisis in the late 50s, and involved in several middle east skirmishes soon after so maybe he could have served in these. Not sure that Hitchcock even thought it out, probably meant to be just a generic vet.

Thanks for the Hitchcock episodes and keep them coming! Herrmann's score of Vertigo has to be one the best scores in cinema history. Was North by Northwest influential on the cinema presentation of Connery Bond? It had to have been! The parallels are uncanny.

I watched The Birds on tv, when I was a little kid. I don't remember any of the talky parts, but I was terrified when the birds started attacking. I guess I had never thought of them as monsters before. I'll have to go back and watch it again. Check out this youtube video. Over 30 bald eagles in this guy's back yard. They are big enough to carry off a dog or small kid! www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZJKmPa42PM
