The Mayans Were Right!! (Well, at least about 2012 horror films that is) Horror Etc drops the ball, or at least watches the ball drop with our annual YEAR IN REVIEW show! There is a fair amount of debate as to how the horror genre faired in its cinematic offerings in 2012. Indeed while certain titles such as Cabin in the Woods, Sinister, Lovely Molly and Woman in Black seemed to please fans, this year (more so than in recent memory) there seemed to be general disenchantment with horror hounds as to what was served up in the theatre and on disc. If less-than-stellar films such as The Apparition, Paranormal Activity 4 and The Wicker Tree (to name a few) didn't leave enough of a bad taste in our mouths, then the glut of direct-to-video (mostly found-footage) titles seemed to sound the death knoll for at least one of your hosts. Too harsh you say? You'll have to listen to find out if redemption and hope was gleamed (in our humble opinions that is) It's the best, worst... and UNDECIDED of the year that was -- with a few miscellaneous titles to keep things fresh, namely Dredd, Les Mis, Django, Hitchcock, The Speak and more. Ted's preparations for the end of the world resulted in a three pack of apocalypse picks to spend armageddon with - Take Shelter, The Day and Last Night. All this and some aspirations towards 2013 mixed in for good measure. As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324

Ted, I am totally with you on Best Worst Movie and the American Scream. Fantastic documentaries. I would recommend American Movie if you haven't seen it already.

Happy to hear that I'm not alone on an island thinking Dredd was a lot of fun! I saw it again (not baked, but feelin a few IPAs) and I had another great time. The 3D was pretty damn good too. Too bad it was such a bust at the box office. Hopefully it will somehow become a cult hit.
Tony, How bout that Reanimator hippy bush? Good to hear you had a great time with it.
Happy New Year!

Looking forward to seeing Hitchcock, The Girl was on UK tv over xmas and Toy Jones was great, and everyone who has seen both performances unsurprisingly seems to say his performance far outstrips Hopkins', so it'd be interesting to be able to compare. Though i would add a note of caution about The Girl as a whole, whilst the performances are great, Hitchcock is written pretty much as a 2d evil sexual harasser with little context regarding his prior behaviour, or attempt to explain what drove him to this crisis. Can't wait to see Berberian Sound Studio this week, i'd be hard pushed to think of a more consistently great actor than Toby Jones at the moment.

Long time listener, first time poster! Great episode. Any chance you have a text file of all of your year end picks?

Nice to hear Ted enjoyed Take Shelter. It was my overall favorite movie of 2011. While the movie fits in the psychological thriller/drama catagory, when the main character has his "visions," they are very creepy and unsettling.

Correction: "Sinister" was not directed by James Wan; it was helmed by Scott Derrickson, who previously directed in particular "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still."
