Although better known for his directorial work( Gandhi, Bridge Too Far & Magic) , Attenborough played 3 disturbing characters that whilst not horror are worthy of consideration and make a good little trilogy back-to-back
1- 10 Rillington Place (1971): A slow paced film, but an excellent performance as serial killer landlord John Christie.
2- Séance on a Wet Afternoon (1964): A psychic convinces her weak-husband to kidnap the child of a wealthy couple, so she can use her 'abilities' to find it.
3- Brighton Rock (1947): One of my favourite films ever with an amazing performance as Pinkie Brown seaside gangster.
All these performances fit into the playing against type category given Attenborough's beloved reputation and would make a good short discussion piece and are all worth a watch

Got to agree that Attenborough's portrayal of John Christie is incredibly creepy; not having known any serial killers personally, it's difficult to use a word like "convincing", but this sense of an individual locked-in around a purely personal terrible core of desire has the ring of truth about it.
