It deserves its own thread.
Saw it this morning.. have been looking forward to it..and I enjoyed it, even though it wasnt what I expected.
Im not gona spoil it at all but I'll say I liked Cavill, Shannon and Adams all in their roles.. this could also be my favourite Lois yet, even though the love story (for the little there was) didnt work.
The story was pretty straightforward too. It was pretty much all about the action and effects and it worked for me... now weve got the origin out of the way im really excited to see where we go from here. A few wee easter eggs about the place for the real geeks to pick out and a few that I got yself not being quite that knowledgeable. also it seemed like they really wanted to avoid saying the S word..for wharever reason.. I await the internets response..

I saw it today and it was better than I was expecting. I've not enjoyed the directors other films. I felt man of steel had an odd structure, the final act being too long. The amount of destruction is over the top to me. I felt Kevin Costner was very strong and a highlight of the movie. I wasn't keen on Lois but she doesn't spoil the film. Michael Shannon does well as Zod. Worst thing was the ihop advertisement. I don't feel it is as strong as the Richard Donner Superman, but not bad. Much better than Superman Returns, but I don't think anything in Man of Steel matched the plane set piece of Superman Returns.

See its funny, I cant argue with any of that.. but yet i liked it more I was kinda M'eh about Costner, he played a smaller part than i expected/hoped he would. I liked that Lois played a bigger part in what was going on. Shannon can do no wrong fr me, love that guy.. I also noticed the Ihop ad.. that said i noticed a few things that i googled afterwards that were easter eggs for people who know this shit.
How do you feel about it going into a sequel?

I'm not big on superman so the only nod I really noticed was Lana Lang. I'd watch a sequel, be interesting to see where they'll go with it. I think it's a bit perverse when films have so much destruction in them. I think that the backstory told as flash backs worked well and helped give it a fresh feel, not copying the Donner film.

when it first went to the bit before the flashbacks I turned to my bro and questioned that.. but honestly it worked and meant you didnt spend too long on the origins of superman which was good. i noticed the Lexcorp trucks in the Zod/Superman fight at the end and also Utopia casino sign was so clear in the middle of all the destruction I knew that meant something..

Wasn't sure what I'd think of Man of Steel since the reviews have been so all over the map. Ended up liking this quite a bit. It was nice to get a fresh and quite different version of the Superman story. Liked the use of advanced technology from Krypton which was weaved throughout the story. Thought all of the performances from the large cast were solid. The big-scale action scenes were engaging for the most part, the constant fighting in & through skyscrapers got a little repetitious though. There were at least a couple scenes which were supposed to be big emotional dramatic moments that didn't quite hit successfully. It was overall a good time at the movies - 8 out of 10.

Ya know, I liked it for the most part while I was watching it, but I think a large part of that was just me thinking "wow, because I'm only twenty, I finally get to see a Superman movie on the big screen" (yeah yeah I didn't go see Superman Returns when it came out). But ultimately it fell flat for me. I was disappointed. The performances were great but I felt the script was weak. I did like that Lois knows Superman's identity. It will help if they decide to use Luthor for the sequel (and really, how could they not?). Lois Lane knows who Superman is, and the world knows she knows. Lex can use her to find Supes.
As for Zod's broken neck... I understand what it's supposed to do, but it failed for me. It was clearly used to establish Superman's feelings about killing, but after all the collateral damage he didn't seem to care too much about causing I just don't find it believeabl. I urge everyone to read Mark Waid's review of the film over at Thrillbent.com. Waid is a successful comic writer and wrote the story Superman: Birthright, a story that definitely influenced this film. Waid is very critical of the film, and his review contains this gem: Superman wins by killing Zod. By snapping his neck. And as this moment was building, as Zod was out of control and Superman was (for the first time since the fishing boat 90 minutes ago) struggling to actually save innocent victims instead of casually catching them in mid-plummet, some crazy guy in front of us was muttering “Don’t do it…don’t do it…DON’T DO IT…” and then Superman snapped Zod’s neck and that guy stood up and said in a very loud voice, “THAT’S IT, YOU LOST ME, I’M OUT,” and his girlfriend had to literally pull him back into his seat and keep him from walking out and that crazy guy was me. That crazy guy was me, and I barely even remember doing that, I had to be told afterward that I’d done that, that’s how caught up in betrayal I felt. And after the neck-snapping, even though I stuck it out, I didn’t give a damn about the rest of the movie.

I don't have a huge problem with the movie, but I felt the film hit it's high points in an awkward manner. Okay, Zod wad killed in the comic back in the 80s by Superman himself. Nothing new here. But this was after Zod had murdered half the world's population in a pocket universe. The scene with Zod trying to fry the family seemed contrived and forced. And the whole Costner death scene ... assisted suicide? Costner dying for the dog ... seems they could have come up with a more interesting way to off him.
