A surprisingly enjoyable old-fashioned ghost movie.
THE PROS: Has an authentic '70s feel. Great performance by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the demonologist husband and wife team the Warrens. Their relation helps define the film and gives it heart.
The scares we've seen before in other movies, but they are executed well. Loved the design of the creepy music box.
THE CONS: the real life Warrens are a bunch of scam artist and hos! They made money by convincing metal ill people they are plagued by demons.
The witch haunting the family in this movie has ties with one of the witches of Salem. So in the Warren's world, witch trails are real - and justified! This ... is unacceptable.
Annabelle the doll is so over-the-top creepy that I had to laugh. Why would anyone want to own a doll, much less invite a wayward spirit to reside in it?
Still a fun movie. I'd be interested in hearing what other folks thought.

I don't know anything about the Warrens, but how do you know they are scam artists? There are a lot of people that genuinely believe in demonic possession, and it's pretty well known the Catholic church trains exorcists.

I didn't want to slam people who believe in exorcisms and possession. And of course I don't know anything for a fact about the Warrens. Kind of hard to prove or disprove something when all you have to go on are first hand accounts where evidence is lacking.
I look at how they sought families with very real problems: drug addiction, domestic abuse, etc., turned it into supernatural stories that were told on the lecture circuit and in books. Add to that the comments made by writer Ray Garton regarding the Connecticut haunting or the Warren's smear campaign against Amityville investigator Dr. Stephen Kaplan, and I don't get a good vibe from this couple. They seem very manipulative to me.
All in all, kind of reminds me of what South Park had to say about psychic John Edwards, and I'll leave it at that. Just my opinion though.

I see, I was just curious as to whether or not there was something conclusive about them being charlatans.
I'm not naive enough to believe that there aren't people who would stoop to that level of evil for fame/money. However when it comes to anything religious/spiritual evidence in any direction is only murky at best.
I want to trust people but I know I can't. I feel like the only thing to do is enjoy stories like these and take them with a grain of salt.

I have to admit they have some enjoyable stories, and I wonder if this will be the start of a series of movies involving Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson.

I have to say I loved the conjuring so much. it just all worked for me, it ws better than I expected, most of the jump scares didnt really get me apart from one where two girls behind me let out the loudest scream ive heard. I had a terrible cinema going experience with this one, a back row full of young talkers and jokers whos hilarious and continued clap game through the movie never got boring. and two girls behind me, one of which halfway through the movie I was convinced was blind because her friend kept telling her what was happening. All that said I still really enjoyed the fim and look forward to seeing it on blu ray in peace

Some girl behind me sounded like she was hyperventilating. I thought that was pretty amusing

I saw this Friday night. I was really looking forward to it after seeing the trailer. However it didn't live up to the trailer for me. I thought it had no atmosphere and was completely devoid of scares. Shame. Performances were good but it just didn't work for me.

Look Gurumatt, weve already discussed how I loved it. So the opinion has been set. you may edit your post or this will get really embarassing for you Joking aside though, this movie reminded me of how I enjoyed the old "true" supernatural/ghost stories as a kid. whether they are con artists or not it got me to buy some books on the Warrens.
