I feel funny posting this after Stuart wrote about quality black and white films but I watched The Human Centipede 2. I am amazed at how well this film looks. Tom Six is not without talent and it has a great look to it. Today's crap films no longer look like the crap films from ten years ago. Tom Six has proven that you can polish a turd and a turd is exactly what this film is. It seems Mr. Six searched the internet to find out what was "missing" from his first film and decided to give the masses what they wanted and boy did he give it to them. If you felt there was an insufficient about of fecal matter in the 1st film, worry not, Tom Sixx has heard your laments and fulfills all of your desires.

I've been absent from this thread for a while, but here's a few recent things I've watched. Oz: The Great and Powerful - Should have been Oz: The Boring and Sleep-Inducing. It's not that the film doesn't have some good moments (China Town is great, the homages to the classic film are plentiful, and Bruce Campbell getting beaten up in another Raimi film is PRICELESS), but the film really lacks a soul. It doesn't help that James Franco is miscasted/collecting a paycheck in the role of the future Wizard of Oz. He and Campbell should have traded roles. REC3 - A passable zombie flick on its own, but not a interesting entry in the REC series. The film adds nothing to the story build up in the previous two films, and even seems to contradict how the "Infection" is spread (since when did the demons start biting dogs?) . Just wait for the fourth film, unless you're a completest or have about 90 minutes to spend on a zombie film that plays out like a Syfy Saturday movie. Event Horizon - Creepy set designs and a couple of unsettling moments. But the film is buried by a formulaic plot that plays out like a spaced version of Hellraiser. And the guy rocketing back to the ship just snapped my suspension of disbelief. No way in hell he wouldn't have missed the ship and slammed onto the surface of the planet. And let's not get into the heat generated by re-entry..... Well, gonna catch a screening of Warm Bodies this weekend. I promised someone I would, and I've heard some good buzz from sites I haunt. Not sure it's a gateway film for new zombie fans, but oh well. It's free. I just wish I had a ringtone of Neil Diamond's Heartlight to play in the theater when all the zombie hearts start glowing (at least that scene was in the trailer). ;D

Watched the movie The Bay after reading some good reviews of it. Pretty disappointing! It takes the found footage approach and I like quite a few found footage movies actually so it was more the execution of it. Thought showing the footage while having a voice-over from the present was clumsily executed. The acting was very hit & miss, and none of the characters are worth rooting for.

Atrocious was...well, atrocious. I wanted it to be something good, because I love Spanish horror, but this was filled with a blah and predictable story, a main character who you were just wishing he would be killed off, and way too many night vision views of trees. Also, some of the excuses to keep a camera in hand were too far-fetched. If I'm drug off by an unseen assailant in the dark and I still have my flashlight in hand, screw the camera. I'm not going back just to get a shot.
If condensed, it probably could have been a decent film, because the director wasn't too horrible at creating tension. Unfortunately, the ending was completely implausible, so I doubt it could be saved unless the ending was changed in addition to cutting off about 20 minutes of trees.

Watched Fermat's Room based on Ted's recommendation.
If you like movies like Cube than you might like Fermat's Room; four mathematicians are lured into a trap that will kill them if they cannot solve math puzzles being emailed to them. I watched it with English subtitles and it is hard to follow the puzzle explanations as they are coming pretty fast across the screen but all in all I really liked it but I'm a sucker for these kinds of films.

Picked up a used copy of the classic House of Wax on DVD. Such great fun. And yes, I'm talking the Vincent Price version, not the horrid remake. Price is at his best in this one, as a sculptor who's wax museum is set ablaze by his business partner. Of course he survives, but he can't sculpt anymore, sooooo.......... Not gonna give it away, if you haven't seen it. And if you haven't, find a copy and remedy that! The movie features some brilliant use of color, stunning cinematography and surprisingly realistic burn makeup. And an early appearance by Charles Bronson! It was originally shot in 3D, so you have to accept the moments where the movie stops to throw something at the camera (the paddle ball barker actually breaks the fourth wall at one point), but it's worth the watch. And speakingof remakes, this DVD contains a copy of the original film, Mystery of the Wax Museum, with Lionel Atwill and Fay Wray! Gonna be watching that one soon. Fay Wray!

Am going through the entire Final Destination franchise, starting with the first. Not bad, but the script trips in the final act over the rules set up in the first hour of the film. And the CGI Death looks awful. You can read more on my thoughts about this film at: shadowoverportland.blogspot.com/2013/03/final-destination-2000.htmlNext up is Final Destination 2. Awesome opening, more exciting death sequences and a major rule change that negates the previous film's climax. Will post a link when the review is ready. Hope no one minds the shameless self promotion of my blog. ;D If the community feels it's inappropriate, please let me know.

My Soul to Take I can't believe what I just watched. What an overwrought piece of shit that was. I seem to remember Tony and Ted being pretty down on it so I'll go listen to that podcast just to feel better.
Cool to see Michonn before she was Michonn.

The Devils Rock Have you ever wanted to watch a mindless horror film and just not think for an hour and a half. That was the mood I was in last night when I selected The Devils Rock from my Netflix On Demand list. It looked like it fit the bill; complete with a hot woman dressed in a Nazi SS uniform on the cover. I didn't get what I wanted but I did get a decent film. Not a great film but I will be watching this writer/Director's career with interest because he got quite a bit out of a limited budget. Great location, good acting and a great costume/makeup design by the people at WETA.
THe story is thus: Two commandos infiltrate a Nazi stronghold on one of the Channel Islands prior to the World War 2 D-Day invasion to destroy a coastal gun. Drawn by the screams from within the bunker they go "off mission" to determine if the Nazis are torturing POWs. They find the VERY gruesome remains of some of the German soldiers and a young woman held hostage. You can take it from there. Not a lot really happens possibly due to budget limits (the film was partially financed by the New Zealand film commision) but I cannot say enough positive things about the makeup effects. It moves along at a rapid pace but it does seem burdened with bad marketing. That SS devil woman I mentioned on the cover? It makes no sense once you see the movie.
If you enjoy the Nazi/Occult films that have been released lately like The Outpost and Dead Snow then you might possible enjoy the latest installment.

Sounds better than my giant robot double feature turd fest.... Yea, I watched Battleship and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. I got to watch them for free, so it only cost me about 5 hours of my life and damn it, the price was too high! With both movies, I was groaning within the first 15 minutes, and things never picked up. Sure, it was pretty cool to look at all the massive destruction (yea, seems rather weird writing that today, with the events in Boston), but I think the budgets for both films would have been better spent supply Syfy with Saturday movies for the rest of the century. To sum up the lessons learned from both these movies.... Battleship: The hot girl will fall in love for you if you commit a felony to get her a chicken burrito, and are tasered as you put it in her hand. Good to know. Transformers: Optimus Prime is a a dick, allowing the deaths of countless people to prove a point to the government that the Autobots are needed to protect the world. A wasted movie weekend, to be sure. Oh, and I did rewatch Final Destination 2, my favorite of the series. Great opener, lots of nasty kill scenes with effects that hold up well, and a few little problems with the plot that don't derail anything (that comes in Part 3). You can read my full review at: shadowoverportland.blogspot.com/2013/04/final-destination-2-2003.html

Oh, and I did catch Warm Bodies. And, to my surprise, it wasn't pretty charming and funny. Not something I'm rushing out to buy on home video, but one to remember if your evening plans involve a non-horror fan date. They'll appreciated the romantic comedy aspect and you won't experience the nausea from watching another Twilight knockoff. Transformers and Battleship at the same time? Does it get uncomfortable watching movies wearing a leather gimp costume? Because that is some sadomasochistic shit!!! Watched two good movie recently both of which were recommended by the Horror Etc. podcast. Triangle: Can't really recommend this one enough if you like time-twist movies. Even my wife got hooked and really enjoyed it. High recommend. Headhunters: Norwegian crime thriller about an art thief who gets way in over his head. There is a scene involving a tractor that had me laughing so hard but then I realized how disturbing it was for me to be laughing. Then i laughed even harder. Watch it before the American remake is released so you can be reminded of how ball-less American mainstream movies are.

Didn't have a gimp suit, but a steady supply of fine, Northwest crafted ales. Quite tasty and a pretty high alcohol level that mitigates the need for a safe word. If it gets to painful to watch, take another long drink and problem solved! In the case of Battleship, I'm surprised I was able to get up and turn everything off after the movie. Damn, the first ten minutes of that sucker was AWFUL!
