I have lots of respect for all of these directors, as well as ones not mentioned (Del Toro, Fulci, Bay...okay scratch that last one), but my vote is for Mr. Craven.

William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist Also Robert Wise (The Haunting), James Whale (Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein) and Roman Polanski (Rosemary's Baby, The Ninth Gate) are all far better directors, I think we can agree, than Tobe Hooper.

I know that. I threw Mr. Hooper up almost as a joke. I didn't use Polanski or Kubrick because I believe that they are representative of other genres in particular moreso than horror. I really should've used Friedkin though. I forgot about him completely.

My vote is for Craven. I enjoy a lot more of his films than I do with the other directors on the list.

harsh call on Hooper, granted he hasn't made the best films consistently but TCM is just as important a movie as Exorcist, hell in horror history and influence its almost as important as Night of the Living Dead.
That said I vote Cronenberg

In the list provided it had to be Cronenberg, the dude's an absolute genius. He's made so many horror movies that have become cult classics it's takes my breath away.
With awesome movies like The Brood,Scanners,Videodrome,The Dead Zone,The Fly,Dead Ringers and the amazing head fuck that is Naked Lunch how can it be anyone else ?
Cronenberg for me is one of those must see Directors and always will be.

Ok, I just had to throw a little love Mr. Raimi's way. Though I do love Cronenberg and Craven, I suspect that for both of them their best days are behind them, at least as far as horror goes - though I'd love to be proven wrong on either count. The classisist in me would love to vote for Hitch, but I really consider him more of a suspense director than pure horror. Romero and Carpenter? well, I'd like to think they both have another great movie in them, but until Romero decides to do something other than another Dead sequel and Carpenter shows he can still match the brilliance of Halloween and The Thing... Raimi, on the other hand, has proven that he can not only work multiple genres, but Drag Me To Hell shows that he still has the flair for the odd an his own personal eye...
