Hey all. I'm really thinking of pulling the trigger and getting an XBox360. There are a few options in which system to get and which accessories are must haves. Any insight from this crew would be greatly appreciated.
I'm an old-school RPG and strategy gamer at heart, but also like the action and sports games as well. I'm not sure if I'm going to be getting into the whole online gaming thing or not. I do have a wireless router, but I'm not sure if I'm down with paying extra for it. What is the deal with the xbox live anyway?
Thanks in advance.

Gary if you enjoy your RPG's defiantly check out Elders Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's one of the best games i've ever played. Fable 2 is highly recommended Fallout 3 is another classic. Mass Effect 1 & 2 are superb action RPG's Dragon Age is outstanding. For your Action/shooters Gears Of War 1 & 2 Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 1 & 2 are incredible games ( even better online ) The Orange Box is worth it because you get the Half Life 1 & 2 and the amazingly addictive Portal game. ( worth the price alone for that one ) BioShock 1 & 2 So addictive and scary as hell. Happy gaming

Finally picked it up yesterday. I went with the regular Elite version (opposed to the Special Edition Elite). As far as games, I got and started Fable II last night. In addition, Halo 3, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Left4Dead2, and Arkham Asylum are in the rotation. I'm really interested in Madden 11 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. A buddy of mine told me he has a few of the other games mentioned above, so I will be taking them on too, in the near future.
Thanks again for the help folks.
When I get hooked up on XBoxLive, I'll look you up synikal.

When I get hooked up on XBoxLive, I'll look you up synikal. For RPGs: Fallout 3 Dragon Age: Origins Mass Effect 1 and 2 All can't miss. And you should be able to get Dead Rising for cheaps. The game has issues, but you're essentially playing Dawn of the Dead. Two short but, IMO, brilliant, games are Portal (which you get with The Orange Box), and Braid (download from XBL). Both are hybrid puzzle games (Portal is a first person puzzle, Braid 2D platformer puzzle), and just wonderfully crafted. Portal has a running commentary by a computer VO which is hysterical, and Braid is suprisingly touching with a hell of an ending.

It comes with Half Life 2 only, and its 1st 2 expansion packs, plus Team Fortress2 and Portal. Given that Half Life 2 originally sold for $50, and Portal is a GOTY winner, and the Orange Box can readily be had for $20 US, it should be a no brainer for most gamers.

I just picked up an XBOX360 as well and I found some great games that you may have heard of.
LIMBO is an amazing downloadable game all in black and white with just amazing visuals and atmosphere
DEADLY PREMONITION is a game my brother let me borrow which I haven`t played yet but from what I`ve seen and heard it`s a big rip off of Twin Peaks

I’m not much of a sports fan but for the other genres I can recommend (even if others have already done so) the following:
Bioshock 1 & 2 (action) – set in the 1960’s underwater city of Rapture where citizens have become depraved lunatics due gene splicing and indulging in their most wildest desires. The first game pits you as a plane crash survivor escaping the city whilst the often overlooked sequel has you being a Big Daddy, one of Rapture’s most fearsome caretakers. Both games have some truly excellent plot twists and characters.
Dead Rising 1 & 2 (action) – essentially Dawn of the Dead: The Video Game, where else can you hot foot around a shopping mall/casino wearing high heels, a Hawaiian shirt and an ice hockey mask whilst attacking hoards of zombies (and occasional humans) with a pair of chainsaws strapped to a canoe oar? Extremely silly good fun.
Condemned 1 (action) – a first person hunt for an insane serial killer through some of the most grim settings ever put to a video game. The first game keeps things straight (and is thus recommended) but the sequel, while having some good moments such as a bear attack in a mountain log cabin, pushes the paranormal elements a bit too far for my liking. All I’m going to say is: department store mannequins.
Alan Wake (action) – a physiological thriller where you play the role of a horror writer who, after taking a trip to the remote town of Bright Falls, embarks on a frantic search for his missing wife as an eerie darkness emerges from the woods. There are a lot of homage’s to films like The Shining, The Fog, In The Mouth of Madness and perhaps most of all the series Twin Peaks. If you liked those then you’ll love this.
Mass Effect 1 & 2 (action rpg) – what a science-fiction epic should be! Take control of Commander Shepard who has to assemble a rag tag squad of soldiers and scientists (both human and alien) in order to take down The Reapers, an ancient alien race hell bent on consuming all life in the universe. The cool gimmick with these games is that choices made in the first game can have an influence over the second (and likewise the second for the upcoming third) and your commander can be as much of a hero or villain as you want them to be. Plus you get to make out with hot alien babes.
Fallout 3 (action rpg) – set in the post-apocalyptic wastelands where roaming gangs of cannibals are only second to the radioactive ghouls and behemoth mutants. Think of an alternative 1950’s where laser guns sit alongside classic cars and cruel groups all want to hire your services for their own twisted ambitions towards what remains of the dying world. This is one massive game that will last you a near lifetime.
Red Dead Redemption (action western) – during the last days of the dying wild west a refrained outlaw must hunt down his former partners in a desperate bid to find his own sense of redemption. Some of the most beautiful landscapes, varied characters and poignant plot lines ever combined into another epic video game.
Dead Space (horror action) – as part of a salvage team you come across a derelict space cruiser where the former crew have become “infected” after digging up some alien marker from a nearby moon. A truly gruesome and action packed game, think Event Horizon meets Alien meets The Thing and you’ve got the right idea.
Other Games Worth Looking At:
R.U.S.E (strategy) Supreme Commander 2 (strategy) Burnout Paradise (action racing) Split Second (action racing) Assassin’s Creed (stealth action) Mirror’s Edge (action) Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (western action) Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (action) Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (horror action) F.E.A.R. 2 (horror action) Ghostbusters: The Video Game (horror action) The Orange Box (pure love in a case) Far Cry 2 (action) Red Alert 3 (strategy) Hitman: Blood Money (stealth action) Just Cause 2 (mayhem action) Lost Odyssey (turn based rpg) Vanquish (action) The Saboteur (stealth action) Resident Evil 5 (horror action) Toy Soldiers (strategy) Stranglehold (action)

I've just been playing Portal 2 for the last few days. I didn't expect it to be as good as the original, because to be honest I think what I loved about the first Portal is that I went into it knowing absolutely nothing... I thought I was playing an (admitedly very good) puzzle game... so when after a couple of hours I heard my 'friendly' guide suddenly say something alarmingly sinister it was a genuine surprise and shortly thereafter I realised I was in the middle of the best, darkest, laugh out loud funniest piece of narrative gaming I'd ever experienced.
I am pleased to report that the sequel is just as good... perhaps even better... its bigger... its funnier and it still has surprises up its sleave.

A remastering of Silent Hill 2 & 3 are coming out, I highly recommend everybody play those. Amazing psychological horror with lots of uncomfortable situations and bizarre enemies. You'll probably get lost, I did, but this is the age of the internet and going to GameFAQs and finding all the information you'll ever need is totally easy to do. I found that a point in the right direction when I got stuck and then playing on my own was the best way to experience this game.
Silent Hill 2 might be one of the best games ever made.

I'm down with that. I missed the originals and would like to find out what they are about after hearing that the franchise was awesome. In the Fall, I'm looking forward to the new X-Com game (Subtitled Enemy Unknown). It promises to be more in line with the original (or more importantly, less like the sequels). For anyone who has never played the original, it is basically a turn based game in which you defend the Earth against an alien invasion. Along with the battles, you need to research the aliens and develop weaponry based on what you learn. My description doesn't do it as much justice as it deserves. Check out Game Informer's article on the title www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2012/01/04/xcom-a-series-that-almost-wasn-t.aspx
