Going Down? We dug way down into the subgenre of horror aboard an elevator. This little niche corner of storytelling is a great match for horror because of the tension and stakes at play in a confined space with potential antagonists and claustrophobia in the mix, however... this was not an entirely successful experiment. We pulled a selection of titles at random in the hopes of discovering a hidden goldmine of a theme. The results are here for you to make of them what you will: Devil (2010) - 5 people stuck in an elevator, 1 of them is the Devil Elevator (2011) - social commentary, corporate greed, and a bomb Blackout (2008) - which of the 3 trapped characters is a killer? The Shaft (2001) - bio-technology results in a sentient, killer elevator A mixed bag to be sure, but between the reminiscing of highlight scenes from movies featuring the elevator, to fun facts on the social dynamic at play in that magic box, to a look at the real-life horror story of a man trapped for 41 hours, we think there is fun to be had. Things wrap up with a discussion on Elijah Wood's stab at remaking Maniac, as well as a brief rundown of Tom Cruise's mind bending sci-fi action flick Oblivion. I don't recall any mention of the elevator in Cabin in the Woods, but overall a great show topic. I like the mention of etc movies like Total Recall, Drive, etc. I need to check out Maniac too.

Man Drive was such a great movie, I remember thinking it might be an ok way to pass some time ,but that movie ended up having everything I love in movies.

I'd like to toss in Louis Malle's "Elevator to the Gallows," not Horror, but certainly Thriller, with some really good tension, and a cool Miles Davis soundtrack.
I'll also say I rented "Lady in a Cage" from the great, now defunct Kim's Video in college and remember thinking it was pretty awesome. James Caan played a Grade A creep, pretty sweet stuff. A real nasty little B-Movie number.

I just have to say I had to test the "open/close elevator doors" buttons at school and they both worked

I just saw the Maniac remake recently and I have to say I wasn’t impressed. The gore was tame and repetitive and, overall, the movie lacked any degree of suspense. The first-person perspective was interesting for a while but it didn’t really allow Wood the opportunity to act. Pity, because from the little we saw of him he was highly effective. For me, the novelty of POV soon wore off and, ultimately, it was an unnecessary and distracting affectation. It also had the unfortunate side-effect of recalling the British sitcom Peep Show…

Other great elevator moments:
The opening act of "Speed"
The climax of the original "Dark Water"
The death of the doctor in "Damien Omen II"
The end credits of "Angel Heart"

Just watched devil and elevator on UK tv in the last week an despite the minor reservations(such as forced social commentary as mentioned) i found them both enjoyable late night tv fodder.add them to the long list of films I've caught in the last few years thanks to the podcast
