It's summertime, and in true Horroretc tradition we are slacking off this week. With some great spotlight shows planned in the near future we took the opportunity to get a little more catching up done with some random topics, recent watches and of course... listener feedback. The subjects range from slasher films, Chuck Norris, shaky cam, the 80's video rental era, the need for modern innovations in horror and much more. There are several film recommendations including Hellraiser (a big announcement is dropped on that subject), Mutants (2009), Mask Maker (2010), Ninja Wars, Storage 24, Religulous and of course Prometheus. There's a wide range of tangents this week which only adds to the fun. Come for the genre talk, stay for the Sean Bean deaths (this week's schlock corner). As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324

Love these episodes and always find them interesting. But did we need the Tom Cruise comments at the start. I know I will get more heat for defending the dude than you will for your comments but to me that was just not fun to hear. I thought you guys were making a positive statement about the subject of Homosexuals and it turned into a stupid joke that kinda contradicted your positive comments. Whether Cruise is gay or not is his own concern and at this point he has become such an easy target for people that all the Cruise hatred just gets on my nerves.

Man this show has a worse rant on Prometheus. I rarely ever see a movie that gets me angry. AVP is better than Prometheus that gave me a laugh.

Great message regarding the conspiracy theories episode. A very loud minority can gain credence or be successful in spreading such views by existing in a vacuum because the moderate, rational 99% grow tired of trying to state what are mundane realities. As a result its important to counter these conspiracy theories in a calm, reasonable way as was done in this voicemail. This was one of the occasions where a voicemail from someone really interested and knowledgable about a topic adds to the show in a way that a general traditional discussion wouldn't cover.

I enjoyed the last two episodes a lot and thought I'd come on and tell you so. I really liked the 'lost in the woods' show because I always listen to the podcast when I go for walks and I felt like I was right there with you! So a few things. First of all, I think John (from Ireland) is one of the most intelligent, eloquent and just all round spot-on contributors I've ever heard on a podcast or a talk radio show or online or WHATEVER and I hope he knows how popular he is. I hope his wife doesn't actually check the phone bill because I'd hate for his contributions to stop! I don't think he uses the forums, but Ted if you see this and you contact John through email or whatever, I'd be glad if you could let him know. That said, I think all of the contributions to this week's show were well considered and thoughtful. While I don't know what you leave out, based on the clips that make the show I have to conclude that the Horror Etc listeners are a pretty fun and intelligent group. Especially compared to the flood of stupidity and half-baked ideas you find on the internet these days. I recently caught Hellraiser 2 and 3 on the Horror Channel and was pretty impressed. I liked the feel of those movies, they manage to create a dark, oppressive atmosphere whilst still maintaining a fantastical aesthetic as opposed to the hyper-realistic violence of Saw or Hostel which I'm not a fan of. Ted was totally spot on by saying Pinhead has a huge presence. He kind of has a Boba Fett thing going on, where the coolest and scariest things about him are the things we don't see but are only hinted at or we create in our imagination. Ted briefly mentioned at the end of the show the chat on Synchtube about not calling people Irish, thought I should clear that up. I don't want to speak for him, but what Junkyard was alluding to was political sensitives between the whole Irish/British thing here in Northern Ireland and how you've got to be careful not to offend. But rest assured, we were joking around and no one was really offended or anything. It's best forgotten. Looking forward to the next few shows, it seems like it'll be a productive summer. I'm hoping to submit a book club review but not sure if it'll happen. Also, you gotta be careful, Scientologists are a litigious group!

Another great episode, thank you Ted and Tony. Seeing the feedback on the Tom cruise comments here and on the Facebook page, I wanted to say something about it myself. I posted on FB but I copied it in here as well because I'm not sure you guys (Ted and Tony) will see it there and I wanted to let you know my thoughts as well. __ I guess I know what you're getting at, Rodney, but the point really is that people should be able to say that someone might be gay without it being perceived as an insult or a mean joke. Know what I mean? I was more struck by the Anderson Cooper comment myself - not in the sense that I was mad about it because I know Ted and Tony meant it in the most positive way - but because I disagree that his coming out is unimportant. Yes it is 2012 and equality laws are being passed but there still is a loooong way to go. A shamefully long way for 2012, actually...Mr. Cooper chose to officially come out because, as he said, he thinks "there is a value in standing up and being counted" and visibility is important. No he didn't have to do that, but it is making an impact for many people, and those who say it shouldn't matter, well, hats off to you but unfortunately not everyone thinks so. And since we're talking horror here, I want to see more gay characters in horror movies. ___
There's material right there for more episodes on issues in horror films, like the Sexism in Horror episode ;-)
All the best to everyone, Mareen

Just downloaded the most recent podcast and All I can say is who left that hack Johnone on , my gawd I wouldn't let him on a fairground ride never mind a pod cast.....( a voice whispers into Johnones ear) what do you mean I'm Johnone...(long beat)..I'll just go stand in the corner.
But Seriously I was stunned when I heard you guys play my most recent comments this week , I am genuinely humbled by you thinking I have something worth saying and I hope I didn't annoy too many listeners to the podcast.
Boomstick in particular thank you for the kind words.
The prometheus rant comes off the fact that it was so disappointing and I recorded that as a warning to you guys, hearing Ted's reaction , sadly I was too late.
One thing guys Boomstick is Correct, Scientoligists are litigous so as a word of advice in future, even if you are joking, use the Word "Allegedly" or the defence" I believed it to be true at the time." this is what the british press use as a defence and seems to work.
Anyway I will continue to send in the odd voicemail as long as you or the listeners want me to.

I think John (from Ireland) is one of the most intelligent, eloquent and just all round spot-on contributors I've ever heard on a podcast ... Agreed wholeheartedly! In fact, I'm a little pissed at Ted for putting my lowbrow "Ninja Porn" story in the same episode as John's more intellectual contributions!

Thanks Boomstick , I tend just to read the forum as If I started posting on everything people would get fed up of me fast.
Stylus I found your Ninja Porn story funny and I think anyone in their thirties can relate to it as we all have stories of renting out "Dodgy"tapes ..I remember when vhs rental first took off , our local supermarket used to rent out vhs tapes such as Deathrace 2000 and Halloween at the sweet counter.

I left this on the facebook for Ted in relation to his Irish comment Okay just got to the part of the podcast this refers to (the what is wrong with calling irish people irish comment). The conversation referred to Northern Ireland and not Ireland . In Northern Ireland just over half the community do not consider them selves Irish and a much much smaller but very loud part of this community would be offended at being called Irish. There is a even smaller part of this community that would hurt you for calling them Irish (I grew up with some of them), in fact many many people have been murdered due to how people see themselves and others in this country. In northern Ireland you don't call someone Irish without knowing their political views first, you also do not call someone British without knowing the same. Hopefully in the not to distant future this will change but I cannot see it in the near future. As I said before I see myself as Northern Irish, not Irish and not British (believe it or not that statement about not seeing myself as British could get me a slappin where i am from). Hope this clears that conversation up for you

Sorry John from Ireland, Ridley Scott has ALWAYS said this is not a prequel to Alien.
The reason he probably made it in the same universe as Alien and not a totally stand alone movie is because he would not have gotten to make it other wise. Personaly I really liked the movie but I really wished he had the balls to have made it a prequel.

Another note on Johns comments. When he is talking about Dr David Kelly he says there was no conspiracy, I would love to know how he came to this conclusion. Read the BBC news story at this link www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13716127 and tell me if you could say either way what happened. Also it was not the press but the government that most people were blaming for his suicide (and I do believe that it was suicide). I watched every news story that was available when this happened. it was one of the most disgusting things the UK government has ever done in my opinion and they have done a lot of bad things over the centuries.
