Watched Hellraiser Two: Hellbound this morning with Bishop as we tested out a way to bring the Sunday Horror Feature back from the dead, and it is a go!
The film is pretty good, with a rather weak ending that turns Pinhead and his cohorts into, well, wimps, and a maniacal new Cenobite that seems too hammy and out of place. Still, better than the sequels that followed!
Be sure to check out the How About a Movie Night, Part 2 forum to find out how to join in the fun next Sunday. It will be fun!!!

Watched Flight with Denzel Washington. If you enjoy Denzel than I highly recommend Flight; it is truly one of his best performances lately.

Was VERY lucky to catch a 35mm screening of King Kong here in Portland over the weekend. What a great film. And the print look FANTASTIC! It was the pre-code version of Kong, so he was more of a beast than the version shown on TV when I was a kid. He was biting and pulling at people, stomping them into the ground, and even tossed a woman to her death when he discovered she wasn't the object of his affection. On a side note.... Oh, Fay Wray! It was a great time, and if you are in the Portland area this weekend, oh my, the same theater has an AWESOME couple of films screening. I plan to make it a double feature, though I'll be paying separate admissions. But WHO CARES, when I can see The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and King Kong vs. Godzilla on the big screen in 35mm?!?!?! Add in Pacific Rim and a screening of Sharknado I arranged at a local pub, and I'm going to have an AWESOME weekend!!! If you're going to be in the area, let me know and we'll arrange to meet at some point!

Your very lucky to see Kong on the big screen, that would be fantastic.
Speaking of luck, I watched a film called Die from 2010 directed by Dominic James and it is a Canadian/Italian production. The film starts off with a distraught looking man sitting at a table drinking, his son walks in and is asked to roll a single die on the table. The son complies, rolls a three and is asked to leave. The man then loads three cartridges into a revolver and promptly blows his brains across the room. This is Die in a nutshell. Six strangers are locked in a room and must survival ordeals that all involve the roll of a single die; i.e, the gun/cartridge moment is replayed and a test to see how many pints of blood can a person loose before dying. It really doesn't start that bad but after about 45 minutes it really starts to loose steam and even an actor like Elias Koteas can't keep it going. The biggest problem is the movie doesn't realize its not as epic as it thinks it is. The soundtrack in the final moments makes you think your are watching something like Inception but instead your are just watching a ridiculous movie come to it's absurd conclusion. If Tony/Ted/Doug ever do another Canada show maybe this will be worth a watch so that Ted can complain about it but I would give it a pass unless your are just drawn to movies about dice.

The Lost (2006) Jack Ketchum adaptation. Good character study of a young psycho, beginning with - and culminating in - some brutal violence.
The Crypt (2009) An indie effort about a bunch of people who break into an underground tomb to steal jewellery. Most of the thieves are women and there’s a strong Descent vibe going on. Predictable and extremely badly acted.
The Reptile Hammer’s companion piece to Plague of the Zombies. A bit boring. Not much happens for the first hour. There are some good-looking scenes in the final act and the pace picks up, but the ending is somewhat anti-climactic.
Phantom of the Opera (1989) This is the Robert Englund version. Although it was visually appealing, I couldn’t shake the feeling that they were trotting out a Freddy Kruger movie under the thin disguise of an old classic. Englund’s make-up was not only very Freddy-esque but it was also quite unconvincing in close-up. Moreover, they introduced a totally unnecessary time-travel element and portrayed Erik as little more than a nut with a razor. Pity. Bit of a lost opportunity to breathe some life into this dusty old tale.

Well, finally went through Dexter: Season 7 today (actually, it was a two day marathon, thanks to the public library here in Portland) and was a bit underwhelmed. The script went into some dark places for the main characters, but I was really hoping the script would "forget" Deb's reason to see Dex before the end of Season Six (which was a horrible scripting decision, IMO), and the season finale just felt like the writers boxed themselves into a corner and came up with the lamest conclusion they could think of. Never mind how impractical it was (Deb would be COVERED IN BLOOD and unable to wear her party dress in the last scene) . And I loved the revel in the bar, as I was assuming something totally different. Nice to be caught off guard by the show, which hasn't done that in a while now. I know, they are building up to a big conclusion, but damn it, the show trashed one of the best characters after developing her based on her skills and abilities, not that of her brother, and in the process, neutered the main character. I liked some of Dex's revelations in this season, but some of the choices he made were not up to the standards set by the previous seasons. Yes, I will watch the final season when it hits DVD, just to see how the show wraps up. But I just get the feeling this series should have ended a few seasons back.

Watched the ABC's of Death on Netflix and I enjoyed it. It has a good to bad ratio of about 1:6.
A few of my favorites were Dogfight, Apocalypse, Quack, Unearthed and XXL (mainly just for that final shot)

Been taking some time away from the theaters to catch up on my to-watch pile of DVDs....
The Hole: Joe Dante's latest is more for younger viewers, but it still has it's moments of creepiness, and another damn clown doll that's just freaky! Good acting, solid story and some great set designs in the final act makes this one any horror fan won't mind watching, as long as you don't mind a lack of gore. Should have been released in theaters.
Iron Sky: Nazis on the moon is a great idea, but the film is hamstrung by some heavy handed political jabs at US politics. Not that I mind someone taking jabs at the US political system, but you can beaten over the head with someone's message for only so long before getting annoyed. Still, the movie is fun for a while, and the effects are great. Just needed more invasion, less Sarah Palin imitator.
Primeval: One of several giant croc movies released in the latter part of the past decade, and it falls flat. Another film that makes the mistake of trying too hard to turn a genre movie into a political allegory. Seriously, hasn't anyone seen Gojira? Anyway, a team assigned to catch a big-ass croc faces a monster they can't control and armed rebels while trying to get out alive. One nice scene involving the croc and a vehicle can't save this cliched final act. Watch only if you have insomnia.
[REC]: A brilliant Spanish remake of Quarantine.....
JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D
Great movie, fast paced and one of the better found footage films out there. It's a must see, must own film.

Watched American Mary. So this film has gotten quite a bit of positive buzz this year and while I liked it, it didn't quite live up to all of the hype. The problem is the script is a little messy and unfocused. If the script could of been tightened up it would have benefited the film. Did enjoy some of the offbeat aspects of the movie, the lead performance of the female character, and some quality gore. Decent but not great- 3 out of 5 stars.

Del, I've got the same movie from Netflix, just waiting to get time to watch it. Once I watch it, I'll post my thoughts.

Of the giant croc movies from that period which is your favorite. I really liked Rogue, Black Water was OK and I haven't seen Primeval yet.

Due to Wi-fi problems and moving house I'm a bit behind but I'm watching Dexter season 6 at the minute and loving it. Michael C Hall's performance is just another facet to Dexter's persona

Finished Dexter season six I thought was probably the third best season after one and four. Also watched Fright Night remake, Universal Dracula ,Infestation and Undead. That's some of what I watched this week. I don't have one specific sub genre, I just live the whole genre, gives you a break from the horrors of the real world.

Revisited The Mummy, and damn, Brandon Frasier is a fine actor..... JUST KIDDING!!!!! Though I do enjoy the Indiana Jones-lite remake, the Karloff Mummy is just amazing. Yea, we only see the mummy for a few moments in the opening of the film (and I have yet to see any actor go crazy on screen better than Bramwell Fletcher), the film still manages to hold it's power over viewers. I remember watching this film as a wee lad in California, and was shocked by the scene where the slaves are speared. I don't think my mom was terribly happy, as she probably didn't expect such a brutal moment to appear on television back in the late 60s. In my opinion, this is the best of the mummy movies. The Universal followups had the mummy shuffling about like a zombie, only with one of him, the victims have to be STUPID to be caught and killed. The Hammer reboot is fine, though it suffers from the same problem as the Universal sequels, and the 1999 remake is glorious dumb fun. But when I want an Egyptian themed horror film to chill my spine, this one is it. Zita Johann is stunning in her role, as is Leonard Mudie. And Karloff. Oh yea. If you haven't seen it, you need to check this one out. Might feel a little slow to more modern viewers, but is a great exercise in atmosphere and dread.
